Dear Michelle,

I have spoken with the teams responsible for both the NPD and genetic datasets. The genetic data requires a MetaDAC application, and the DfE may not be willing to allow linkage to genetic data, or at least an application would have to go to a special committee. The NPD data is only available for those born since 1981, who consented and were able to be matched.

This post gives an idea of the percentage match rate: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/2015/02/11/release-of-education-data.

This frequency table shows the respondents' ages at the time of the nurse visit: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/health-assessment/dataset-documentation/wave/xwave/datafile/xindresp_ns/variable/confage

Given these parameters, we think that the sample size will be too low make it worth going through the application processes.

Best wishes,

Hi Stephanie,
Given that I wish to calculate polygenic scores, a sample of a couple of hundred would be worthwhile. But it wasn't clear from those tables whether the overlap is that large. Is there a field that I could search to get this information?
Many thanks,
Michelle

Dear Michelle,

The sample size is different for each of the outcomes we have (e.g. test scores at end of primary school, GCESs etc). Can you tell us which you are interested in?

Best wishes,
Stephanie Auty - Understanding Society User Support Officer
