Dear Olga,

You can find this information by looking for the universe in the questionnaire:
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/questionnaires/ms03_questionnaire.html#mpoliticalengagement_w3

It is not the same universe for each question as some questions depend on which region the respondent lives in. In some cases the universe will depend on the answers to previous questions or otherwise vary within a module but in this case it only varies by region.

Best wishes,
Stephanie Auty - Understanding Society User Support Officer

Many thanks Stephanie! This is very helpful!

Just to double check, does Universe mean subsample in which all individuals were asked a certain question?

Thank you,
Olga

Dear Stephanie,

Sorry to bother you again.

I am still trying to figure out how the filtering was occurring for the perpolinf variable. I was able to figure it out for a number of other variables but still not sure how it was done for this one.

The note in the questionnaire says:
Universe
If(GRIDVARIABLES.EMBoost <> 1) & (GRIDVARIABLES.GPCompare <> 1) & (GRIDVARIABLES.LDA <> 1)NOT in the Ethnic Minority Boost, General Population Comparison sample or Low Density Ethnic Minority Area sample.

You mentioned the region in your email below. I checked GOR and sample origin variables but still not clear. Could you please help me to figure this variable out?

Many thanks and kind regards,

Olga

Dear Olga,

Yes, that's right. The Universe is the group of respondents who are asked that question.

In the political engagement module, the first question has the Universe you specified in your reply, but later questions vary by region, for example the second question, Colbens1, On a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means strongly dislike and 10 means strongly like, how do you feel about the Conservative Party? has the Universe if(GRIDVARIABLES.EMBoost <> 1) & (GRIDVARIABLES.GPCompare <> 1) & (GRIDVARIABLES.LDA <> 1)NOT in the Ethnic Minority Boost, General Population Comparison sample or Low Density Ethnic Minority Area sample and ifHHGRID.region = 1|2|3Lives in England, Wales or Scotland.

The Universe can vary for each question within a module, so please check the Universe for each question.

Best wishes,
