Description

Dear Madam/Sir

I would like to enquire about the US survey. I have been exploring the website but would like clarification on a few points, I am in the midst of preparing an ESRC application and want to make sure that I have the details correct!

1. I have area level data that I would like to match to the individual respondents for 2012, 2016 and 2018. Can you please confirm the matching waves to these years? (ie. 2012 = waves 3 and 4?)

2. I am hoping to use questions on smoking and alcohol consumption. Can you please confirm the waves closest to the years 2012, 2016 and 2018 that will have data on alcohol consumption and smoking practices (for youth and/or adults)

3. I will be using data for Scotland only. Can you let me know the sample sizes (households and individuals) for Scotland for the waves in 2012, 2016 and projected sample for 2018?

4. Can you please confirm when 2018 data will be be released?

Many thanks in advance.

Dear Niamh,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this.

1. The mainstage user guide provides these details, please see table 1: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/d/308/mainstage-waves-1-6-user-guide.pdf?1479807450

2. Once you have decided which wave data you will use, you can check the questionnaire from that wave (or search the online data documentation): https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage

3. Please check the frequency distribution of the variable “country” in the individual and household level files (indall, indresp, hhresp) for the waves you want in the online documentation.

Projected sample size for Scotland for 2018: estimate 1350 responding households and 2400 responding adults in 2018. Note, that this is based on estimates for Wave 10 Year 1 and Wave 9 Year 2. These can only be estimates because we only have complete figures for Wave 6 – with Waves 7, 8, and 9 still in the field. The sample numbers for 2018 depend on the response rates at these earlier waves.

4. We aim to release our latest data through the UK Data Service annually in November. As per the data collection schedule, data collection during 2018 will be part of waves 9 and 10 with anticipated release dates of November 2019 and 2020 respectively.

We hope this helps, best wishes, Victoria.
