Description
Dear staff,
I am really interested in survey design of Understanding Society. I notice that the survey is conducted annually with a 2-year span, and the sample is allocated to monthly batches. I know it must take great efforts to conduct annual survey with such a large sample. So I am wondering is there any detailed and systematic explanation on why it is designed in this way?Are there any pros and cons (including for fieldwork, survey result, data collection etc) for such design?

Hello,
When the survey started there were interviewing capacity issues due to the large sample size and all interviews being face-to-face. So, the fieldowork period for the General Population Sample GB part and the Ethnic Minority Boost Sample was spread out over 24 months.

"The 2,640 GPS primary sampling units in England, Wales and Scotland were systematically allocated to 24 monthly samples, each therefore consisting of 110 PSUs.....The EMBS, like the GPS, is allocated to 24 monthly samples. As with the GPS, the allocation was made systematically." Lynn (2009)
