Description

Hi, I am interested in caregivers as well as care recipients, in particular the relationship between the two, i.e. whether they are partners, child and parent etc. I found the variable "aidhu1" and "aidhu2", which states the relationship between the two if the carer is responsible for someone outside of their residence ("aidhh"). However, how can I find out the relationship between a caregiver and a care recipient if they are living in the same household ("aidxhh")? I assume that I will need to use the egoalt file and the "relationship_dv" variable. Therefore, I would assume that there is some variable which states a personal identifier or something similar to identify the recipient. Unfortunately, I cannot find that anywhere.
I look forward to your response and thank you in advance for your help.
Best,
Lea

Hi Lea,

The variables which state which of the household members are cared for by the respondent are w_aidhua1-w_aidhua16, so you can use these along with w_relationship_dv to find their relationship.

For respondents caring for someone outside their household, w_ aidxhh, and w_aidhu_1- w_aidhu_2 will give their relationship. Please be careful about the direction of relationships and recode where necessary.

This is the caring module of the questionnaire at wave 6, which lets you see these questions and the order they are asked:
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/6/questionnaire-module/caring_w6#caring_w6.caring

Respondents being cared for by someone outside the household was not collected at waves 1-6. However, there is a new social care module included in wave 7, asked of over 65s, and includes what types of care are received as well as from whom, inside or outside the household and the relationship:

This data will be published in November this year.
