Description

Hi,

I am new and trying to get used to Innovation Panel. I've read the manual and checked all the variables available in all waves.
I am suprised that I cannot find the person's highest educational degree and the field of study (subject) he/she majored if he/she graduated from a major granting institution.
I know it's somewhere perhaps with some links to other panels, but if you kindly help me on this I really appreciate.

Hi Yigit,
we collect some information about the highest educational qualification (the information is stored in the variable _hiqual_dv) but this does, as you have correctly observed, not include the specific subject studied or the specific degree obtained. Given that the IP is a relatively small nationally representative household sample without (i.e., there is no oversampling of student populations or young people with degrees), I would not expect there to be large numbers who have studied a particular degree.

If you are not tied to using the Innovation Panel in your analysis and can wait, you may want to keep an eye on the Understanding Society mainstage data. Since Wave 5 we have been asking participants for informed consent to link to their HESA records. For those who gave consent, we will be able to augment the survey responses with detailed higher education information in the future. As a registered Understanding Society data user you will be informed when such linked data are made available through the UK Data Service.

Hi Yigit,
the linkage process in this area has not advanced as much as other data linkage projects (such as linkage to school, health and income records). I do not think the data will be shared within this year as it is a complex process.
