Description
Hi,
i'm studying the self-employment in the the UK. I'm interested in the transitions of employment. I need the following variables about the individuals along the waves:
Years of education (Have any directly question?)
Marriage
Number
Spell of unemployment
Age
Skill
Hourly wage
Owner of real estate
Net weath
Looking at the base i don't know which variable best represents earnings from the job, and some measure of savings. Any suggestions?
Another question is: which units of measurement are the following questions? Pounds? Millions?
Pos. = 1571 Variable = b_fiyrinvinc_dv Variable label = income from savings and investments, annual
Pos. = 1579 Variable = b_inc1lab Variable label = amount income component 1: net labour income
Value label information for b_inc1lab
Pos. = 1588 Variable = b_netinc1 Variable label = total net personal income - no deductions
Value label information for b_netinc1
Pos. = 1577 Variable = b_fimngrs_dv Variable label = total monthly personal income gross
Value label information for b_fimngrs_dv
Pos. = 1305 Variable = b_prfitba Variable label = total personal income annually
Value label information for b_prfitba
It's possible to get the values of:
b_jspayw
Pos. = 800 Variable = b_jspyni
Many Thanks!

Dear Italo Franco,
As variables that are most suitable for any analysis depends on the research question we cannot say which variable will be most suitable for your specific analysis. But here are few tips that may be helpful:
The data management team produces a set of variables referred to as derived variables (DVs). Some of the DVs are cleaner or imputed versions of the original variables. While other DVs combine information from a few different variables and were created so that users don't have to do this themselves. These DVs generally have a suffix "_dv". So, if you have a choice between a DV and an original variable, use the derived variable. For example, for highest educational qualification use "hiqual_dv". But note if you were interested in detailed vocational qualifications then this variable would not be suitable. In that case you would have to look at those variables directly.
Note, there is no "years of schooling" variable although you can find out the age when they left school and further education.
Please search our online documentation for the variables you asked about. See here:
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation.
Also look at the income section in the User Guide for the income variables:
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage
The income variables you mentioned are in Pounds. Please look at the questionnaires for verification:

Best wishes,
Alita
