Description

Hello,

Is it possible to derive any measures of occupational social class for the parents of new UKHLS participants when the respondents were aged 14, equivalent to the measures available for the old BHPS participants? In the family background module it appears the only information on parents' occupation are i) whether a participant's father and mother were in work when the participant was aged 14, and i) the soc2000 code for those jobs. However having followed the links from the UKHLS website to the camsis files at http://www.camsis.stir.ac.uk/versions.html#Britain, it seems extra information - on whether the parent was self-employed, had employees or was a manager, equivalent to variables `w'pasemp `w'paboss `w'pamngr at the BHPS waves which covered this - is required to derive the social class measures from the soc2000 codes. Given this, is there any other way to obtain roughly equivalent information? Or are there any plans for social class measures for respondents' parents to be calculated and made available to data users?

Best wishes,
Amanda
