Description
Dear UKHLS User Support Team,
I hope you are well.
I am interested in the care home variables listed below, but I have noticed that they do not appear to have any valid values. Could you please advise why this is the case?
Best wishes,
Haiyu

Hello Haiyu,
The values for these variables are coded as -8 (inapplicable) because, according to the questionnaire routing, there is no care home resident in these cases.
For example, the routing for chmecode (Name/address of care/nursing home) is as follows:
It is asked if ff_hhorig < 21 (Resp is in continuing sample) and if (Issued Sample member NOT selected at CORESWHO | (ABSUN = 2 & UNIHOME = 2) | (ABSPRIS = 2 & PRISHOME = 2) | INCLUD = 2) & NOT (If this is NOT the main residence for the Leaver but they are working away or at boarding school OR the Leaver has their own home or is in Halls of Residence or is in an Institution other than a prison or is somewhere else and NOT reported as deceased) and if (ADDRCHCK = 1 | (ADDRCHCK = 2 & STILLRES = 2)) (Leaver from issued address OR leaver is not still resident at issued address) and if CLSTAT = 9 (Leaver moved into care/nursing home)
You can verify this in the “Question universe” section at https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/chmecode/
I hope this information is helpful
