Description
Hi,
I was looking for more details on the wave 16 biomarker data. I have seen the paper published in March 2023 on the wave 16 pilot, but I wondered if there is further information. Specifically I have questions about the sample size - is there an estimation for the proportion of current participants who will complete this biomarker study? Is the study adults only ie 16+ or also on younger ages? And of course if there is any update on the measures that will be included that would be really helpful!
Thank you!

Hello Eleanor,
Wave 16 will not include any younger participants (under 16).
We have outlined the collection for wave 16 here: Meena Kumari, Tarek Al Baghal and Michaela Benzeval (2022) A framework for the re-collection of biomarkers in Understanding Society at Wave 16, Understanding Society Working Paper 2022-08, Colchester: University of Essex. https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/research/publications/working-paper/understanding-society/2022-08/
I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you. Yes, I have seen this document from 2022. My question was whether there had been a more recent update on these proposals, since I understand that data collection is now underway? I wondered whether these biomarkers proposed in this document were confirmed, or whether there were any changes from these plans? Specifically one biomarker that I'm interested in is GlycA, which I understand is a better measure of inflammation that CRP. Thank you!
Hello Eleanor,
The analyte list remains unchanged, and unfortunately, the GlycA biomarker is not included in the current set of measurements.
There are plans to establish a serum sample bank in the future, which could allow for additional measurements based on interest. However, this is still in the early stages, and further details are not yet available. Access to such samples would likely require a formal application process for usage.
I hope this information is helpful.
Best wishes,
