Dear ISER staff,
my name is Raffaele Ciula and I would like to use the Understanding society dataset to assess the effect of the universal credit on child health using a longitudinal quasi-experimental analysis.
I have few questions regarding the structure of the understanding society dataset:
I would like to make a difference between outcome variables between the wave seven and the wave nine. What does it mean that the wave 7 includes the years 2013-2015, that it is three years time? Also, as the wave 7 (2013-2015) and the wave 9 (2015-2017) have an overlapping year, does this mean that I cannot use these wave to make differences between outcome variables between those waves (for example difference between children's health status in the period 2015-2017 and the children's health status in the period 2013-2015)?
I would like to use the wave 9, but the special licence forms are difficult to understand and to fill, is there a free version of the understanding society regarding the 9th wave?
Can you help me fill the UK data service special licence form? I sent an email to the UK data service staff last week, but I have not received any help yet. If you can help me, I will send you the questions which are difficult to understand and to answer. If you cannot help me can you suggest me an email address to which I can ask for help regarding filling the special licence form? Thanks for your help;

1. We aim to interview households and individuals at roughly one-year intervals. You can check the gap between interviews in consecutive waves by comparing the dates stored in the interview date variables:
Individual (indall, indresp files): intdatd_dv, intdatm_dv, intdaty_dv
Household (hhresp file): intdated, intdatem, intdatey

2. The fieldwork spans two years, so when you check the study timeline, it will show, for example, that wave 1 ran from 2009 to 2010.
It’s possible that two people could be interviewed in wave 1 and wave 2, but with different timing:
Person 1: Wave 1 interview in 2009, Wave 2 interview in 2010
Person 2: Wave 1 interview in 2010, Wave 2 interview in 2011
Even though the fieldwork for wave 1 and wave 2 overlaps, it’s still possible to perform within-person comparisons, as the gap between interviews for each person is approximately one year.
Regarding the Special Licence, support for this is handled by the UK Data Service. However, I recommend checking first if you actually need the Special Licence. Start by reviewing the data available from this download: https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=6614. I’m also attaching a file that outlines which variables are only included under the Special Licence.
