Description

Dear Understanding Society Team,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Shutian Liu, and I am a PhD student at Imperial College London, conducting research on topics such as impulsivity, intertemporal discount rates, patience, and self-control . While I have done my best to navigate your database and explore the available documentation, I realize that your team’s expertise far exceeds my own, and I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

Through the variable search website provided by your team, I have located two relevant variables: Parental assessment of child patience, which asks, "Is CHILD NAME generally an impatient child, or a child with a lot of patience?", and Parental assessment of delayed gratification, which asks, "Is CHILD NAME generally a child who takes a long time to reflect on things and thinks before acting, or is CHILD NAME a child who acts without much reflection, in other words, is very impulsive?"

I would like to confirm that these variables are indeed part of your dataset, and I would appreciate any additional information or variables related to intertemporal discount rates (such as the Monetary Choice Questionnaire) or other constructs relevant to my research.

Thank you very much for your time and support. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Yes, these variables are in the dataset. If you go to our interactive variable search page: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/
And type "immaptient" in the search box, you will see this: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/?s=impatient&post_type=variable_mainstage&submit=Search
There is only one variable in the search result - chpat. If you click on "chpat" you will get to this page: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/chpat/. Here you will see which datafiles and waves the variable is in, what the response frequencies are by wave etc.

Similarly if you search on "reflect" there will be quite a few results, but the one that seems closest to the above question is "chdelay". If you click on that you will go to https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/chdelay/.

The online search engine is the best way to check if a variable is in the dataset (without downloading the data).

Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Understanding Society User Support Team
