Inquiry on Wave 13 Data for Variable 'm_lmar1y' Regarding First Marriage Year

Dear Understanding Society Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out regarding the Wave 13 dataset, specifically the variable m_lmar1y which records the year of first marriage. I have noticed that 99% of the entries for this variable are marked as inapplicable.

Could you please help me understand the reasons behind this high percentage of inapplicable responses? Is it because less than one percent of the survey participants have ever been married, or is there a possibility that the data was not fully captured or is missing?

Any insights or clarifications you could provide would be immensely helpful for the accuracy and depth of my analysis.

Hello Yihua,

This variable is collected from new entrants who have not been interviewed before, excluding rising 16-year-olds whose marital status is any of the following: married, civil partner, separated from spouse, divorced, widowed, separated from civil partner, a former civil partner (civil partnership having dissolved) or a surviving civil partner (partner having died). Consequently, there is a high number of inapplicables cases in wave 13 because they are not new entrants. You can find the variable universe and routing using the “variable search engine at https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/lmar1y/ just look for “Question universe”.

UKHLS has recently released a partnership history file, which includes details about the start and end dates of all partnerships, such as marriages, civil partnerships, and cohabitations (living together as a couple) reported by adult respondents in all Understanding Society (UKHLS) and British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) samples. This dataset could be helpful for your analysis. You can download the dataset from the following link SN8473.
