Description

Hi there,
I am currently using both the main survey and the covid 19 wave to conduct some analysis, and I would like to measure household income for both waves. However, I found there were many missing values/refusal/don't know for the hhincome_amount variable in the Covid wave. I am wondering how to impute these missing values, as it would be too many to drop all of them and I am not sure if I can directly use their pre-COVID household income since Covid may change their income situations significantly, and I have already used their previous household income. Do you have any suggestions for this?

Thank you!

Hello Shiyu

I recommend reviewing the UKHLS COVID-19 user guide particularly sections 11.3 Income and earnings variables, and 18.5 Derived Income variables.

Missing values for the derived income variables in the COVID-19 dataset have not been imputed in the 2019 versions. Consequently, there are currently no variables containing household income estimates available. However, the complete set of Understanding Society income variables, including household income estimates, is available as part of the main Understanding Society wave 10 and wave 11 releases in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Please review Derived Income variables section for more information, and review sub-section 10.7 in the UKHLS COVID-19 user guide to merge it with Covid-19 dataset.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Roberto Cavazos
