Description
Hi,
from the variable catalogue I can see that "urban_dv" is derived from the ONS Rural and Urban Classification of Output Areas 2001. Does this mean the UKHLS still assesses recent individual's Rural/Urban status by their closeness to urban settlements of 10,000 or more IN 2001 or has this been / is this going to be updated?
I think it is reasonable to assume that some areas may have experienced quiote significant population loss gain over the last 20 years.
Many thanks,
Caroline

Dear Caroline,
We will consider updating the urban_dv variable using the newer 2011 classification. In the meantime, you can apply for the Special Licence copy of the census 2011 urban rural dataset which contains the full classification: https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=7630
