Description

Hi,

I'm trying to compute some variables which require interview date across the whole BHPS/UKHLS panel. The interview year variable (harmonised istrtdaty) is not available for wave BA though. Why is this? And is there an alternative variable in the harmonised file that I'm missing? The Start of interview day and month variables (istrtdatd and istrtdatm) are available for it.

Many thanks,
Albert

Dear Albert,

You are right, istrtdaty is indeed missing in ba_indresp and we will consider adding it in the next release. However, you can easily work it out from the information available on our website and in the dataset:
1) you can check the (scheduled) fieldwork dates for each wave here: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/survey-timeline, you can see that wave 1 BHPS was scheduled for Sep-Dec 1991,
2) however, in case the fieldwork had overran some interviews would have happened in 1992, so you need to check in which months the interviews in wave 1 BHPS took place running frequencies for istrtdatm. You will see that all interviews happened from Sep to Dec meaning that istrtdaty equals 1991 for the whole sample.

Best wishes,
Piotr
