Description
Hello,
I am writing to you because I am running an analysis on the motherhood penalty in the UK and, in the first part of my project, I am trying to replicate previous findings from the literature.
Authors, such as Kleven et al. (2018) make use of the fiyrl variable. However, I do not seem to find the same (long term) trends as them. I wanted to know whether any change has been applied to the raw data, since their work, as I cannot find the information in the User guides? This would justify my findings.
Thank you very much for your reply.
Best wishes,
Césarine

Hello,
In principle, many of income variables in Understanding Society are updated in each release of the data (so at least once a year in November) as they include imputed data which often changes slightly, but most of such changes are minor and are not recorded in the study documentation. However, this is BHPS income variable and these variables are no longer regularly updated, though some changes might have been done during the harmonisation process around 2017-2018 or earlier when the BHPS was active. In any case, any major changes would be registered in the BHPS Harmonised Guide (https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/documentation/mainstage/user-guides/bhps-harmonised-user-guide.pdf), BHPS User Manual (https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/documentation/mainstage/user-guides/bhps-user-manual-volume-a.pdf), or in the UKHLS revisions documents https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/user-guides/main-survey-user-guide/revisions-to-previous-releases. I checked these documents and didn't find any notes on major changes.
I would recommend checking whether you are using the same edition of the data as the authors of the paper you mentioned, this information is included in the study documentation files accompanying the datafiles in the package you downloaded from the UK Data Service website.
Best wishes,
