Description

Hi,
Does this Labour income variable (w_fimnlabnet_dv) also capture the Statutory maternity pay (SMP) that the employers pay to their female employees who are on maternity leave?

Essentially women who are on maternity leave get their regular salaries for a few months- so is this counted as a labour income or this information is captured in some other variable in the survey data?

Hello,

Basic information on how the income variables were created is available in this User guide section:
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/user-guides/main-survey-user-guide/derived-variables-income-and-other

More detailed information is available here: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/working-papers/2019-08.pdf

MSP is not asked - please check the questionnaire. Earnings questions are asked in the current employment module and other income & benefit information are collected in the income & benefits module - see the different types of income asked about, variable name FICODE.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Understanding Society User Support Team
