Description
At the Centre for Ageing Better, we are putting together a report on the State of the Nation for our older people. One of our priority areas is “connected communities”. I’m trying to find variables that pertain to this and have found that you had a variable for “able to access services when need to” and “what stops you from accessing services such as… when you need to” in Wave 6.
1. Can I confirm that these variables are not included in the upcoming Wave 8?
2. Do you include any variables that get at:
people “having things to do” where they live
Having places to go
having people to meet – everyday interactions as opposed to deeper friendships and relationships
3. Finally, I believe that there is an easy way to run quick descriptive analyses of understanding society data through the website without having to download the whole data set into SPSS or the like. Is this the case? I need a cross tabulation of the most recent "access to services variables" by age group. How can I get this without downloading the whole dataset?
Finally, could I ask that this query be expedited? I have had a great deal of trouble registering to use this and I do need this data as soon as possible.

Dear Aideen,
It looks like the questions you are looking at are part of the Local Neighbourhood module: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/6/questionnaire-module/serviceuse_w6
These questions are not part of the Wave 8 questionnaire.
You may be interested in the Service Use module, although it is part of the extra 5 minutes questions which have a smaller sample size and focus on ethnic minoroties and was asked in Waves 4 and 6, and appears again in Wave 10.

https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/4/questionnaire-module/serviceuse_w4
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/documentation/mainstage/questionnaire/wave-10/W10-questionnaire-consultation.pdf
Some of the questions in the Social Care module in Wave 7 may be relevant: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/7/questionnaire-module/socialcare_w7 or the Family Access module from Wave 3: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/3/questionnaire-module/familyaccess_w3
We also have a Loneliness module in the Wave 9 questionnaire: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/documentation/mainstage/questionnaire/wave-9/W9-questionnaire-consultation.pdf
There is a self-completion Neighbourhood module in Waves 3, 6 and 9: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/6/questionnaire-module/scaneighbourhood_w6
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/3/questionnaire-module/scaneighbourhood_w3
Also, the household questionnaire at Waves 3, 6 and 9 have some questions on graffiti, rubbish, insults or attacks etc., which could affect whether someone feels able to go out to access services or meet people.
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/6/questionnaire-module/household_w6
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/3/questionnaire-module/household_w3
You could also consider linking our Special Licence geographical variables to any publically available lists of services that you are aware of.
You will need to download the dataset to create crosstabs of the data, it is not possible to do it through the website at this time.
Best wishes,
Stephanie

Dear all, I read this topic (very interesting to me) and I have a question (sorry if silly):
Stephanie in her answer mentions some references to wave 8,9 and 10. But isn't US arrived only at wave 7? What does it mean those references?
Thanks a lot, G

Dear Giorgio,
Wave 8 data is due to be released next week. Wave 9 data will be released towards the end of next year, and Wave 10 the following year. Questionnaires are available for these waves on the website now as fieldwork is already in progress. This is so that researchers can plan their research and know when questions will next be repeated.
Best wishes,
Stephanie
