Description

Hello User Support Service,

I am a student researching youth poverty in Britain using the
Understanding Society survey data from Wave 1.

I would like to know, or be directed to documents that tell me, where
exactly the variables for material deprivation are derived from.

I know that the questions were incorporated from the BHPS and can see that
the questions in the survey relating to deprivation are in previous waves
of the BHPS but have not as yet found any documentation which explains why
they are used.

It will make quite a difference to the definition of multi-dimensional
disadvantage I use and the validity of the deprivation variables. For instance, are they
constructed by consultation with the public or decided by the researcher?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Matt

Matt,
The source of the material deprivation questions in the household questionnaire (from matdepa) is the Family Resources Survey (FRS).
