Description

I am trying to examine people who have experienced care. I have attached an excel sheet containing the frequencies for the a_relationship_dv variable. I am going to be using the adopted/relationship and foster relationship to identify the youth contain within the youth file (10-15) who are in these categories as in care. I was wondering if I should be using the a_relationship or the a_relationship_dv as there seemed to be an issue with this variable. Can you also confirm that using this variable would be done so in the correct manner (example its not deserved from another section of the questionnaire such as the La_adopt variable is derived from the fertility section? and therefore I was told in the past that it could not be used in the above mentioned manner.

Thanks
Zoe

Dear Zoe,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

You should use the relationship_dv variable – this corrects a couple of inconsistencies in the relationship variable. You can use the variable to identify young people who are living with a foster or adopted parent. However we do not cover young people or children in care who are in institutions, so you can’t say anything about that part of the population. Does that answer your question? Looking at the sample size there aren’t that many children like this in each wave, so your estimates would not be very precise.

Best wishes, Victoria
