Description

Hi, I need to look at the effect on highest education qualification. However, there are two variables about highest education qualification in the main wave which I found some confusions. It seems that both d_qfhigh_dv and d_hiqual_dv are derived indicators for the highest edu qualification with the latter include the BHPS sample. I tried to cross-tab these two variables but some inconsistencies were found. Therefore, I want to understand why and which variables should I choose.

Thanks.

HIQUAL_DV is available for both UKHLS and BHPS 1-18 and is based on additional information about vocational training (see data set documentation). A respondent may, e.g., have a HNC/HND and this would be treated equivalent to having an “other higher degree” in HIQUAL_DV but would in itself not produce a valid value of QFHIGH_DV. QFHIGH_DV can on the other hand be produced on the background of questions only asked in UKHLS and hence with fewer generalisations about some of the categories.

Jakob
