openParliamentary Constituency Codes
80%
Description
I have accessed the latest version of the Parliamentary Constituency file, and noticed that the constituencies are identified using old codes e.g., Aldershot is identified by the old GSS identifier code of E14000530, rather than the new code (following the 2024 boundary update) of E14001063. Can you confirm that this is a labelling error and doesn't indicate errors of constituency identification in the file?

Hi Stuart,
In Wave 15, the May 2024 release of ONSPD was used (see https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/documentation/data-linkage/geographical_lookup_tables.pdf
). This still reflects the pre-boundary-update Westminster parliamentary constituency codes (e.g., Aldershot = E14000530), meaning the boundary update had not yet been incorporated.
Best wishes,

Thank you for this update. Is there any way of knowing when the updated boundaries will be incorporated into this dataset?

Hi Stuart,
Wave 16 will use the May 2025 ONSPD. Since the Westminster parliamentary constituency (PCON) boundary changes took effect in August 2024, I’d expect the May 2025 ONSPD to reflect those updated boundaries – so Wave 16 should include them as well. That said, this ultimately depends on whether ONS has incorporated the August 2024 boundary updates in that specific ONSPD release.
Best wishes,
Piotr
