Description

To whom it may concern,
I am contacting regarding questions I have on the seearnnet_dv variable within the indresp data file in the UKHLS.
My questions are as follows:
-How was the data for seearnnet_dv collected (ie self-completed questionnaire, interviewer question, etc)
-What question was asked to the respondent?
-What guidance was given to the respondent for this question (if any)?
-If seearnnet_dv is a derived variable, from which other variables is it derived from? (If this is the case can the information in the previously requested questions be given on the source variables)
-Any other information on seearnnet_dv that you feel is necessary

I am asking this as I am using the UKHLS as part of my PhD project, I appreciate you taking the time to deal with my query.

Kind Regards,
Benjamin Bolger

Hello Benjamin

The variable seearnnet_dv is a derived measure of net self-employment earnings, constructed using variables such as: jsprem, jsprey4, jsprbm, jsprby4, jsaccs, jsprf, jsprls, jsprni, jsprtx, jspayu, jspayw, jspyni, and jspytx. These variables come from the Self-employment module of the questionnaire, which you can review here: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/questionnaire-modules/selfemployment_w14/

To explore these variables further, you can use the Mainstage Variable Search Tool, where you can search by variable name or concept (e.g., "self-employment"). Here is the link: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/

For further details, I recommend reviewing the Derived Income Variables section of our Main Survey User Guide at https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/user-guides/main-survey-user-guide/derived-income-variables/

You may also find useful information in Working Paper 2019-08: Understanding Society and its income data, particularly Figures 38 and 39, which outline the construction of both seearngrs_dv and seearnnet_dv: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/working-papers/2019-08.pdf

Additionally, the following paper provides a useful overview of the income data in UKHLS:
Fisher, P. and Hussein, O. (2024), Understanding Society: the income data, Fiscal Studies, 44(4), 377–397. https://doi.org/10.1111/1475-5890.12353

I hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
