Description

Good afternoon,

I am a researcher with an interest in mental health variables, and I was wondering whether, in the main study, any mental health or psychiatric diagnoses beyond the predefined categories have ever been collected - perhaps through an open-ended question allowing participants to specify additional conditions themselves (and if so, what is the variable code for it).

I would be grateful for any information or guidance you can provide.

Kind regards,
Emanuele

Hello Emanuele,

Apologies for the delayed response.

Regarding the "other" health condition option, respondents were generally able to specify their condition, and this was recorded verbatim. However, this free-text information is not released in the data.

That being said, there is a follow-up question for a specific health condition. If a respondent selected "An emotional, nervous or psychiatric problem" (variable hcond22), they were then asked to identify the specific type of that condition in the MHEALTHTYP question.

Using all responses from the HCOND series and these follow-up questions, a composite list of health conditions was created, represented by the variables HCONDCODE1, 3-8, 10-12, 15-16, 19-21, 23-43, and 97.

I'm attaching a brief health condition guide that provides more details. Please note that this guide is currently being updated to include information from the latest survey waves.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Roberto Cavazos
