Creation of a unique calendar year for which information has been collected for a person*year dataset?
Hi. Could you please help create a unique calendar year for each wave when the individual respondent is interviewed? I would like to combine indresp data from all waves in a long, person*year format.
The calendar year should reflect the year for which the information is collected. I’m interested in UKHLS wave 1-13 data, birth cohorts 1983-1997. I tried interview date intdaty_dv, but some respondents have had two interviews in one year from different waves. Please see the example table:
pidp | intdaty_dv | intdatm_dv | wave | age_dv | doby_dv |
------------- | ------------------- | ------------------- | ------------- | --------------- | ---------------- |
1558565 | 2011 | 1 | 2 | 17 | 1993 |
1558565 | 2011 | 12 | 3 | 18 | 1993 |
476598415 | 2020 | 1 | 11 | 25 | 1994 |
476598415 | 2020 | 7 | 12 | 26 | 1994 |
I tried deriving the calendar year from the interview date, for instance, when the month intdatm_dv is earlier than June or July, but with no luck. I still have many double calendar years for each respondent.
I appreciate your consideration!
Best,

Hello Remigiusz
This process is not entirely straightforward. For instance, due to overlapping interviews, you will need to make some decisions about whom to include. Understanding Society has produced Calendar Year Datasets for 2020 and 2021. I recommend reviewing the Understanding Society: Calendar Year Dataset, 2020 User Guide, particularly Section 2 on Data Structure, as it provides useful guidance for creating your dataset.
Here is the link for:- 2020: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/documentation/user-guides/8988_calendar_year_user_guide_2020.pdf
- 2021: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/documentation/user-guides/9193_calendar_year_user_guide_2021.pdf
I hope this information is helpful.
