Description

Dear Understanding Society team,

I was wondering whether there are any resources/code available that would help me create a measure of overcrowding?

Thank you so much,

Michaela

Dear Michaela,

There is no derived measure of overcrowding but you can try to create one yourself using the following variables: hsbeds, hhsize_dv, hsrooms.

Dear Piotr,

Thanks so much for your response. In overcrowding measures, it is often needed to also know the exact age and sex of the residents, especially children, to get at the exact estimate. Does this mean this will need to be somehow derived from egoalt files or is there a simpler way to do it?

Thank you so much,
Michaela

Hi Michaela,

Age and sex of all members of the household is recorded in in the indall file for each wave. You may find some of the syntax/code on our website useful in this case, e.g. "Summarising individual level information at the household level" which summarise individual level information within a household (number of 18-24-year-olds in the household) from an individual level file and then add it to the household level file. https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/syntax/

Best wishes,
Piotr
