Description

Hello, I am trying to link survey responses to electoral results for the Westminster constituencies. I have obtained the information about the Westminster constituencies of the respondents. However, these seem to be the most recent constituencies. For elections before 2005, I am unable to assign some constituencies to individual responses because these constituencies only existed up to 2005. Would it be possible to obtain more accurate information about the exact Parliamentary constituency where the individual lived at the time they responded? Thank you in advance.

Hello Margherita,

The geographical data files for all waves of UKHLS are generated, whenever feasible, from ONS Postcode Directories (ONSPD) corresponding to the approximate mid-point covered by each wave. Specifically, ONSPD May 2010 was used for wave 1, ONSPD May 2011 for wave 2, and so forth. For more information please refer to “Understanding Society Geographical Lookup Tables” at https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/documentation/data-linkage/geographical-lookup-tables.pdf

Please refer to Table 1 of the previously mentioned file and particularly to the variable “pcon” which provides information on Westminster parliamentary constituencies.

This information is released in the Special Licence dataset with the reference:
SN 6668 - Understanding Society: Waves 1-13, 2009-2022 and Harmonised BHPS: Waves 1-18, 1991-2009: Special Licence Access, Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies

This data file includes the wave-specific household identifier (w_hidp) and the geographical locator variable “w_pcon”.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Roberto Cavazos
