Description

I am working on a project looking at parental imprisonment. I was interested in the variable in each wave that indicates whether a household member was absent for the reason that they are in prison.

I have found this in "absreason" for the first wave within indall, and then in abspris after wave 7. However, i have not been able to find these for waves 2-6 (abspris or absreason within indall for each wave). Page 24 of this paper (https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/working-papers/2019-15.pdf) indicates that the question was asked every year but doesnt say in which variable. Could you help me locate this?

Hello Katherine

The paper you mentioned used the variable clstat (leavers abode) and according to our data team, this variable is not released because leavers are dropped as the Household Grid module (hhgrid) is only for those finally located in the household.

The study has these two other variables that you might explore cmcsanil6 and cmnil8 which are related to child maintenance. These variables offer information for waves 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. Additionally, variables dieprismth and dieprisyr related to dates when leavers died (if in prison) are available from wave 6 onwards.

Please note that for waves 2 and 4, no released information exists regarding absences due to imprisonment.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Roberto Cavazos
