Description

I am looking to link consecutive waves together as well as link individuals data with their spouses. I am wondering if someone could advise in which order it would be best to do this, should I link individuals and spouses at each wave and then link the waves or should I link the waves I wish to use first and identify spouses afterwards? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Best to Link individuals and spouses at each wave and then link the waves. Here are the syntax files about how to match individuals with their spouse or partner, and how to link individual level files across waves which you may find useful: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/syntax Look under the "UKHLS deposited syntax" tab, and look a the syntax files under these headings.
- Merging individual files across waves into wide format
- Merging individual files across waves into long format
- Matching individuals within a household

These data management exericses are also covered in greater detail in our online MoodleX courses in R, Stata, SPSS & SAS: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/help/training/online/introduction-course

Hope this helps,
Best wishes,
