Description

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,
I have attached a copy of the SN 6666 user guide published by Understanding Society.
I am puzzled by the number of LAD that is reported in the attachment:
if my computations based on the attachment are correct then there are 56+239+36+33+24+44 = 432 LAD in England, Wales, and Scotland. However, when I go to the Office for National Statistics I obtain a number of LAD that is quite below 432.
Something like 363 LAD for England, for instance.
I would really appreciate your help on this.
Have a great evening,
Nico

Thanks for your reply.
As a follow-up question/comment, I would like to have a list of all local authority districts used in the UKHLS.
Where would I find such a list?
Best,
Nico

Hi Nico,

1) please note that it might happen that some numbers in the ranges are not in use, e.g. in the most up-to-date list of LADs E06000028-E06000029, or E070000100-E070000101, so counting the total number in the way you proposed would not give the correct figure (https://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/datasets/ons::local-authority-districts-may-2021-uk-bfe/about),
2) the list of LADs has been changing over the years and this is reflected in our data, so there are differences between e.g. wave 1 and wave 11,
3) you can find the complete lists of LADs used in the UKHLS in waves 1, 6, and 11 with the sample sizes here:
