openBHPS Wave 1-18: Which documentation to use to convert SIC codes (variable mrjsic) to actual industries.
100%
Description
I am currently using the British Household Panel Survey (study 5151). Specifically, I am using all waves 1-18 (1991-2008).
I require support with regard to the SIC code variables for individuals' current job (mrjsic). I have already gotten in touch with the ONS, but they were unable to provide me with a valid mapping of SIC codes to industries. I have consulted the various SIC documentations that are available, but it remains unclear which classifications were used for each wave. For example, when looking at all SIC codes used in wave 1 (1991), amongst the SIC codes I find the code 4363. However, when looking at the classification documentation for SIC codes valid from 1980 to 1992, this SIC code is not listed. Hence, I need to conclude that wave 1 (1991) does not use the SIC documentation used from 1980 to 1992, but either a later or earlier one. Can you please help me understand which SIC documentation to use for each wave? Does each wave use the 2007 documentation?
I hope that you can help me understand how to convert a SIC code from any wave to an actual industries.

Hello Simon,
Please take a look at the BHPS User Guide: https://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/bhps/documentation/vola/index.html
