Description

Hi,
I hope this finds you well.
We’ve been doing some policy work which requires use of the derived variable jbiindb_dv. We understand that these classifications are based on a condensed 2-digit versions of SIC2007 codes, and were hoping you would be able to provide us with the correspondence between the SIC codes and the categories used in jbiindb_dv. We haven’t been able to find anything on your website, so have attempted doing this ourselves, but we would be grateful for your guidance.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Lisa Panigrahi

Hi Lisa,
as is indicated in the variable description, this variable is from the Cross-National Equivalent File (CNEF). You can find the variable documentation on the designated CNEF page, https://cnef.ehe.osu.edu/data/codebooks/
Best wishes,
Gundi

Hi, we are also looking at this. I have looked at the Cross-National Equivalent File documentation, now found at https://www.cnefdata.org/documentation/codebooks . However this does not provide any mapping from SIC2007 codes to jbiindb_dv. Is it possible to get more details on this?

Best wishes,
Eleanor

Hello,

In the documentation (https://uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5f6e0dd55d5ed36431d960c4/5fb580668de81c92324d644e_UKHLS_CNEF_Codebook.pdf), on page 33, under the description of the one digit industry code variable (E11106) it says "These data are available only under special license. The CNEF data can be distributed but the underlying data we use to construct our variables are not publicly available. Contact the UKHLS staff to get permission to access those data. If you get permission, contact us to get our code." Right after this is the description of E11107, the two-digit industry code variable and in the Method section for this variable it says "See note for E11106".

Please contact CNEF directly for the code.

Best wishes,
Alita

Hello,

I am attaching the code for the variables w_jbiindb_dv and w_jliindb_dv, but the coding of inapplicable cases is done at a later part of the process so may not match. Please note,
0: CNEF industry coding frame inapplicable code
-7: Understanding Society proxy code (w_jliindb_dv is missing for proxy cases as they were not asked about this)
-8: Understanding Society inapplicable code for cases where the respondent was not eligible for that question

Hope this helps. If you have further questions please let us know.
