Description

Hi there,

I've been looking at the overtime variables, and am a little confused at the measurement technique. Both jbot and jbotpd claim to measure overtime exclusive of any existing normal working hours, yet there are some readings according to which individuals can have up to 90 hours of overtime a week despite already claiming to work 80 hours a week normally (from the jbhrs variable). How should I interpret jbot and jbotpd?

Many thanks

Dear Xavier,

You can see the flow of the questions, either by downloading the full questionnaire here: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/questionnaires
or looking at the module in the online documentation - this is for Wave 9: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/9/questionnaire-module/employees_w9

The wording for w_jbotpd is "How much of that overtime is usually paid overtime?", and is asked after w_jbot, so these figures should not be added together.

The numbers given are simply reported as answered by the respondents, and it is up to the analyst to decide what to do if some values seem unlikely. If you would like to discuss this with other analysts then you could join our jiscmail list by emailing

Best wishes,
Stephanie
