Description

I was wondering if it was possible to determine whether an individual was a single mother or divorced when they were younger from the dataset.
I looked into all of the data dictionaries and haven’t found a suitable variable.

I am currently using the ukhls_w8 datasets.

Thank you

Dear Chetan,

New entrants are asked their relationship history in the relationshiphistory module at the wave they join the survey (https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/wave/9/questionnaire-module/partnershiphistory_w9). The easiest way to access the data for all waves is to use the Marital and Cohabitation Histories dataset, available here: https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=8473

You could use this in combination with the mother and father ids (w_mnpid, w_fnpid, w_mnspis, w_mnspid) of children in the w_indall file at each wave to find children living in a one parent household.

Best wishes,
Stephanie
