Redmine Support #2063 (Feedback): List of Validated Measures or Scales used in the Study? https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20632024-03-04T14:30:12ZLuke DeCoste

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a list of validated measures that are used in the study? Specifically I'm wondering how to identify questions that should be grouped together to produce a specific construct.

e.g. One variable is the 7-item short version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS, see Tennant et al., 2007).

Are there other scales that have been assembled intentionally that we can somehow identify? e.g. I'm using a number of variables related to sleep (hours of actual sleep (hrs) ghq: loss of sleep quality of sleep overall cannot get to sleep within 30 mins wake up in the night). Is there research behind the use of these variables that can be found? I have similar questions regarding variables related to sleep, exercise, etc.

I'm wondering where I find a list of scales used in the study.

Hi

I am having issues when trying to use the code creator on your website. When I click save the save it does nothing and doesn't save the variable to the code creator on the right of the screen. I have tried different browsers, clearing my cookies and different variables but have no luck.

Dear officer,

I am looking at the variables indicating the volunteering. I noticed that 'volfreq' collected during waves 2,4,6,8,10 is available when 'volun' is yes, can I set the value of the 'volfreq' for individuals whose 'volun'is no as zero?

also, another variable 'lactl' indicates volunteering frequency during waves BH06, BH08, BH10, BH12, BH14, BH16, and BH18. I am wondering if any other variables indicating the volunteering were collected in the same waves as 'lactl'. In addition, can I set the missing values of 'lactl ' as zero?

Looking forward to hearing from you and many thanks for your time.

The variable search page on the understanding society website seems to have been updated recently and is no longer working well. I've tried multiple times to search various variables (either by their encoded name e.g. xpoily for oil and gas expenditure) or by using descriptive words, and in all cases I've tried so far the variable doesn't come up.

If it would be possible to try and figure out what's going wrong here, that would be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure it would be very helpful for other users if they're facing similar issues.

Hello,

I am sorry, I think I selected the wrong "assignee".

I am working on my masters thesis on depression and planned to use the BHPS data set (w6-w18). There are questions to self-assess whether someone is struggling with depression.
Is there any question which covers whether someone has been clinically DIAGNOSED with depression (like the variable "hcond17" in the Understanding Society data set)?

Or asked differently: Does the variable "hlprbi" in the bhps data set mean, that someone is diagnosed, or does it mean that the individual self-asses oneself as being depressed?

If there is no such variable, is it possible to use the variable "hcond17" and hcond17a" from the Understanding society dataset, link it via the idp to the BHPS data set and create a new variable in the bhps dataset which determines whether and when an individual from the bhps got diagnosed?

Thank you very much in advance! I hope I was able to state my concern in an understandable way.

Hi,

I am trying to merge individual files across waves 10 and 11 into wide format to create a 2019 calendar year dataset.
I used this method from "Box 1: Example syntax for pooled analysis for cross-sectional estimation relating
to calendar year 2011, with weight re-scaling" in https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/documentation/user-guides/mainstage/weighting_faqs.pdf

For the purpose of the research I am working on, I am using the equivalised household income and other variables referring to parental occupation, education and place of birth.

Since I am using it together with EUSILC 2019 for different EU countries, I was comparing the weights with the weights in EUSILC. While the sum of the weights in the latter equals on average the 80% of the real population in each country, the sum of weights of the dataset I created for UK 2019 (with the merge of wave 10 and 11) gives a number way lower than the census 2019 UK population.

Could you please help me understanding how those weights are constructed, which characteristics of the population they consider, whether they can comparable to ones in EUSILC and whether the procedure I followed to merge the two waves is correct.
Many thanks in advance for the support!
Support #1894 (Resolved): Weight for unbalanced and merged UKHLS and BHPS datahttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18942023-04-21T14:30:20ZYanan Zhangzhangyanan0918@gmail.com

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits.

I am currently working with individual-level data from the merged Waves 1-18 of the BHPS and Waves 1-8 of the UKHLS datasets. I have a couple of questions regarding the use of weights in my analysis. I would appreciate any guidance you could provide.

1. In my study, I am employing fixed effects estimates to analyze the relationship between two variables, x and y. Given this approach, is it necessary to apply weights to the analysis?

2. I have followed the guidelines and used the longitudinal weight provided in Wave 8 of the UKHLS. However, I understand that this weight is applicable only to those who have participated in all waves. Since many individuals have only participated in parts of the waves, I am unsure how to generate weights for these participants. Could you please advise on the appropriate way to handle this situation?

I am looking at the data on the place of residence. I have one doubt which makes me a little bit confused. I am wondering which place the person belongs to in this case.

Dear officer,

I found no region of government indicator in the * *_youth files in BHPS. To solve this issue, I used the * *_hidp identifier in the files of * *_hhresp to merge with * *_youth files to get the information on the region of the government of youth files. Am I right in this way?
I also found that there was no sample in bk_youth, bl_youth and bm_youth for Northern Ireland. I am wondering if this was the case and the reason why.

Using the data management syntax available on your website, I was able to match parents with their children, and using those matched files, I was able to construct a matched and merged file for data concerning parents and their children. My research focuses on intergenerational mobility in Britain so it is important for me to have data for the variable paygu_dv across all waves. However, this yields an unbalanced panel, and unfortunately, doesn't allow me to run regressions because stata shows an error saying 'no observations' despite efforts to treat it as a panel. I understand that there may be missing data and inconsistencies but I've tried to include survey weights and conduct a weighted longitudinal analysis but that hasn't worked. I have also tried the tsspell command to potentially try and balance the panel and that hasn't worked either. I am just unsure if there is something I am missing. I saw a couple of other queries about a similar issue but I did not seem to understand the solution. I am incredibly sorry for my incompetence but I'm not sure how this issue can be resolved.
Dear Sir/Madam,

Sorry to trouble you again.

I wish to ask a question on parental education in the USoc. I understand that the BHPS data were 'rolled-in' at W2 of the USoc and parental education was asked at W13 of the BHPS. Information of parental education was also collected at w1 of the USoc. So, in the USoc, parental education was a combination of the BHPS W13 and USoc W1 data. Looking at the xwdat at Wave 12 of the Usoc, I could see that both paedqf and maedqf contain both BHPS and USoc sources information.
