Redmine Support #2063 (Feedback): List of Validated Measures or Scales used in the Study? https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20632024-03-04T14:30:12ZLuke DeCoste

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a list of validated measures that are used in the study? Specifically I'm wondering how to identify questions that should be grouped together to produce a specific construct.

e.g. One variable is the 7-item short version of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS, see Tennant et al., 2007).

Are there other scales that have been assembled intentionally that we can somehow identify? e.g. I'm using a number of variables related to sleep (hours of actual sleep (hrs) ghq: loss of sleep quality of sleep overall cannot get to sleep within 30 mins wake up in the night). Is there research behind the use of these variables that can be found? I have similar questions regarding variables related to sleep, exercise, etc.

I'm wondering where I find a list of scales used in the study.

Hi

I am having issues when trying to use the code creator on your website. When I click save the save it does nothing and doesn't save the variable to the code creator on the right of the screen. I have tried different browsers, clearing my cookies and different variables but have no luck.

Hello,

I am sorry, I think I selected the wrong "assignee".

I am working on my masters thesis on depression and planned to use the BHPS data set (w6-w18). There are questions to self-assess whether someone is struggling with depression.
Is there any question which covers whether someone has been clinically DIAGNOSED with depression (like the variable "hcond17" in the Understanding Society data set)?

Or asked differently: Does the variable "hlprbi" in the bhps data set mean, that someone is diagnosed, or does it mean that the individual self-asses oneself as being depressed?

If there is no such variable, is it possible to use the variable "hcond17" and hcond17a" from the Understanding society dataset, link it via the idp to the BHPS data set and create a new variable in the bhps dataset which determines whether and when an individual from the bhps got diagnosed?

Thank you very much in advance! I hope I was able to state my concern in an understandable way.

Dear Understanding Society Team,
I would like to inform you that my job market paper out of my dissertation (Essays In Immigration Economics) has been accepted at the Oxford Economics Papers.
I have now a few questions. First, I used 10 waves of the restricted UKHLS and merged them in one dataset. As a data provider, what information would you need about my upcoming publication, if any at all? Second, OEP asked for the dataset. I assume that I cannot make it available to them because it is restricted data. What can or should I provide them with instead?
I was using SN 6666 (local authority districts) and SN 6931 (main data), Waves 1-10.
Thanks,
Nico Ochmann
Support #1753 (Resolved): How to analyze environmental habits likert scale https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/17532022-08-17T16:14:12ZNichaphat Surawattananon

Hello,

I'm using all envhabits variables (11 items e.g. leave TV open). Could you please suggest if I could summarize the score (which suggest how often they are doing each environmental behaviour)? or could you please suggest the better and valid method?
Thank you so much!
Hello!

Hope this email finds you well.

I am currently working with COVID-19 youth data and I have a question about weights. I have already read the user guide you previously sent me, however, I still have a question.
1) I have merged COVID youth wave 4 (July 2020) and wave 8 (March 2021). There are two weights available in this datasets (cd_betayth_xw and ch_betayth_xw). Do I need to use them both? Or just one of them? And do I need to use any other weights when I am merging to COVID waves for youth?
2) Then I have another dataset - I have merged (1) COVID youth wave 4 (July 2020), (2) COVID youth wave 8 (March 2021) and (3) baseline UKLHS Wave 10 (2018-19). Which weight I need to use in this case?

Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello!

My name is Irina Kolegova, I am a Masters student at the University of Oxford. Currently I am working on my thesis on how COVID-19-induced hardship experienced by a parent is associated with child outcomes. By "COVID-19-induced hardship" I mean being laid off or switching to a furlough status. By children outcomes I mean child mental health (GHQ-12) and educational progress (reported by a parent during COVID). For my preliminary research I am planning to examine parents and children separately using descriptive statistics. But for my main analysis I wanted to use a linked dataset that consists of parents (18-65) and their children (linked by their ID) aged 10-15 (youth questionnaire).

Could you please tell where can I find linked parents-children dataset over the period 2019-2021 (the UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS) dataset (2018-19) linked to its COVID- 19 Supplement (from April 2020 onward))? Also, could you please tell me which weights or additional preparation techniques should I use for this analysis?

Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you. If you need any further information on my research design - please feel free to contact me.

Dear Understanding Society Team,

I am looking at change in health status if individuals accross wave 2 to wave 5. My variable of interest comes from the longitudinal self-completion questionaire therefore I believe the right weight to use for my fixed-effect models is indscus_lw. However, when I want to run my fixed effect model with this pweight, stata tells me that the weight must be constant within pidp. To which values should I therefore set my weight to? What does a indscus_lw=0 mean?

Thank you for your help,

We are doing some research on the effect of interviewers on the effectiveness of incentives, one of the data sets we are using is the Innovation Panel (Wave 1). It is the sample file which shows the fieldwork outcome for each issued address and has the interviewer ID attached. We have come across a potential problem with your analysis which relates to whether the outcome data is based on the initial (prior to re-issues) or final (after re-issues) outcomes. We think it is the initial outcome but cannot tell from the information provided. Because our analysis uses the experimental design of within-interviewer allocation of the incentive, it is important that our analysis is based on the initial rather than the final outcomes.

I wonder whether a data set with the initial outcome codes is available for Innovation Panel wave 1 and how we can obtain it?

Dear Understanding Society members,

I am contacting you on behalf of the Active Healthy Kids Wales report card expert group http://www.activehealthykidswales.com/.

As the AHK-Wales expert group of academics, educators and allied professionals we are concerned about the health of children in Wales. The AHK-Wales expert group aims to use data on physical activity/inactivity behaviours and influences to advocate for children’s right to play, to be hooked on sport and dance, learn and achieve, and be active and healthy. We are motivated to promote healthy active behaviour and physical literacy in children. Our mission is to produce AHK-Wales Report Cards that provide a clear evidence base on quality indicators related to physical activity that should be used to advocate and influence local, regional and national policies and investments in physical activity for children and young people.

We are currently in the process of assigning grades to the following indicators:
<ins>Physical Activity and health behaviours and their outcomes</ins>
- Sedentary Behaviour
- Physical Activity
- Active Transport
- Organised Sport Participation
- Physical Literacy
- Physical Fitness

<ins>Settings and Influences on Physical Activity and Health</ins>
- Family and Peer Influence
- School
- Community and the Built Environment
- National Policies and Strategies

I can see that on your website, all data is reported for UK children on the whole, but I am wondering whether you have data specific to children/adults in Wales? Further, if so, is there any way that we could have access to the Welsh data?

I would like to ask where I can find “device used” variable in Wave 7 of Understanding Society. I was also not able to locate variables which record devices available to the respondent (I am aware that this information was collected in the Wave 7 of the main survey). I checked all files but did not manage to locate any of these variables.

I would also like to ask what the coding “3” mean in g-indall file, “mode of completion of household grid” variable.
I'm in a very urgent/immediate situation so if you could direct me or find me a dataset (or tell me how to find it) that looks at (young) people use of social media and its impact on mental health that would be very appreciated, it's for a project where I have to use the R software to compute statistics and show that my analysis helps (or not) to extent knowledge on the research problem (in my case the correlation between the use of social media and mental health).

my tutor suggested I came through your institution and after spending 2 days in your website I have given up, there is so much stuff. my tutor tells me first:

'Did you find any information on the variables you need through US?'

I had no clue what he meant, I guessed I would be interested in variables such as age? nationality? gender? ethnicity or as many variables as I want, based on my specific interest.

His reply was:

'The understanding society dataset is huge so in the first instance you would need to identify where the bits you need are. Look for a “code book” or other guide to the variables. You’re looking specifically for variable names and for the file name containing them. I can help with fiddly aspects of loading this into R but you need to go through the administrative side of getting to grips with what’s in the dataset'

I went as far as finding this page, then I get lost, when I click on some of the links I get e.g. 'variable 160'...what does it mean? that that study has 160 variables and I have to know what to unpick based on my want/need?

sorry if I'm asking silly questions but I have been chucked into a stats course and hve little knowledge and understanding. can you help? many thanks in advance. danilo
