Redmine Support #2018 (Resolved): Month migrants came to Britainhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20182023-12-20T10:59:26ZMichael Mahony

I wish to use Understanding Society retrospective data to construct life histories of migrants within the Understanding Society survey from their point of arrival within the UK.

The retrospective data is generally provided in monthly format. However, I can only find the year migrants came to Britain (yr2uk4).

Is there a variable capturing the month migrants arrived in the UK?

Thanks in advance for your help,

The variable search page on the understanding society website seems to have been updated recently and is no longer working well. I've tried multiple times to search various variables (either by their encoded name e.g. xpoily for oil and gas expenditure) or by using descriptive words, and in all cases I've tried so far the variable doesn't come up.

If it would be possible to try and figure out what's going wrong here, that would be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure it would be very helpful for other users if they're facing similar issues.

Hello,

I am trying to look at participants' start date of their current job. In the Wave 12 questionnaire, it looks like "jbbgdat" was used, however I can't find this variable in my dataset or in the variable search tool. I looked at the jbbgd/m/y variables, but they have ~98% inapplicable responses. Was jbbgdat included in Wave 12 or any previous waves? Or is there a different variable I should be using to look at employment start dates?

Hi there,

I'm wondering why are there so many 'inapplicable' responses for Wave 12 loneliness measure items (sclackcom, scleftout, scisolate)?

Dear colleagues,

I have observed that the derived variable "Born in UK" reports a substantial number (8.61% of observations, if I'm not wrong) of 'missing values'. The other two values are obviously 'born in UK' and 'not born in UK'. Is there any specific reason / pattern explaining these missing values.

Many thanks for your attention

Hello

I would be greatful if anyone could explain this aspect of the DVLA dataset. I’m looking at the proportion of non-taxed vehicles. In accordance to the descriptive statistcs in the HLS' website, about 14% of the cars in the dataset are not taxed (variable e_vehicle_status). The DVLA, however, estimates that only 1.4-1.9% of the cars are not taxed in any one year (since 2015).

I really would like to gain some insights on this discrepancy. I wondered if someone involved in the DVLA dataset could please explain what the likely reasons behind these differences are. Specifically, I would like to be able to rule out issues of measurement error.
Best regards
Eduardo
Support #1866 (Resolved): Code Creator Beta No longer working https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18662023-02-24T09:38:13ZScarlett Scott

I am trying to follow the suggested syntax for appending individual level files across waves into a long format. However I wish to retain some variables that are not available in all the waves.

When I try to use the syntax dofile available on the website (MERGING INDIVIDUAL FILES ACROSS WAVES INTO LONG FORMAT) I get error messages when it encounters variables that are only available in some waves (e.g. "variable a_simrace not found").

I noticed on the moodle course a command called "isvar" was proposed as a solution. However, when I try this I also get an error message, saying that "the command isvar is not recognised" (I am using Stata version 17).

Dear Understanding Society team,

I was wondering if there is any way to know whether a woman (specifically, a mother) responded to the partnership histories. I know that in the partnership histories, you only include those who had at least one partnership spell. My question is, how do I differentiate the mothers who had never been partnered and those who just have many missing responses and therefore appear (based on the merge) as never partnered, but have rather incomplete responses?

Based on phistory files only, when merging with indresp (all waves), I have much more 'never partnered' mothers than anticipated in the data.

Hi,

I was wondering whether you have any plans to make the 2011 LSOA file (https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=7248&type=Data%20catalogue) apply to the BHPS waves, in the same way that the 2001 LSOA file (https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=6670&type=Data%20catalogue) applies to the UKHLS waves of the survey.

I ask because we are only permitted to match one or the other to the Special Licence file, and therefore it is not possible to study the whole panel using the most up-to-date LSOAs.

Hi,

I've noticed that the Special Licence dataset SN 7630 (Rural-Urban Indicators) is not as described here: https://beta.ukdataservice.ac.uk/datacatalogue/studies/study?id=7630&type=Data%20catalogue#!/documentation . In particular, the codes are not as described in the PDF (for England and Wales, Scotland, and NI). They seem instead to be 1-6, A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.

Would you be able to advise on this?

Hello

I am trying to create datasets for each wave of the survey which include the date (year) of birth for each of a respondent's children.

I initially started with the ch1by_dv (DOB of oldest biological child) in the xwavedat file. I found that the number of respondents with oldest children born in each year seems to drop off sharply in the early 2000s, particularly for women. I would expect fewer people to have had their oldest child in very recent years, but not such a sudden drop or a gender difference. Can you explain why this would be the case and/or share the code (in stata) for the derived variable?

(I merged variables from a_indresp and xwavedat to tabulate a_sex_dv and ch1by_dv)

I've also tried using an adapted version of the code from support enquiry #947, intending to identify a years of birth for all resident and nonresident children from the w_indall and a_natchild files, but as my output on oldest children looks very different to the ch1by_dv output, I don't want to go too far with this until I understand where the difference has come from.

Many thanks

Hi,

I'm using the crosswave variable racel_dv: when I match it into UKHLS indresp waves that I am interested in, I notice that there are a surprising number of missing responses (usually around a 1000). Why is this? I would think that ethnicity would be available for every respondent.

Thanks,
Albert
