Hello,

Might you be able to help?

The variable lables are inconsistent with the questionnaire grid for the harassment module which asks the EMBS where attacks took place in wave 1. Which is correct please, see attachment for further details.

I am trying to create a UK born variable for all UKHLS members across waves. There doesn’t seem to be a value for the BHPS members who joined at wave 2. I have checked the BHPS data files and they don’t seem to contain a variable that indicates whether someone is born in the UK. There is a country of birth measure that contains a handful of respondents specific overseas country of birth. Is there a way to create a uk born measure for BHPS respondents in UKHLS up to wave i?

Hi - i'm not sure this is the correct forum but hoping you can help. I'm using CACI Acorn data which supply UK ethnicity rates which are sourced from 'Understanding Society'
They are reporting UK currently stands 92.2% white, which is quite different to the UK Census latest figures of 85.1% white (2011)
I'm hoping I can check these figures via this forum and the 5% swing in 9 years seems quite large.
Support #1373 (Resolved): Child file a-j [ca_childdoba]https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/13732020-07-01T12:20:14Zleandra geyser

I really tried to figure this one out before asking here, also had a scan of other questions but I cannot understand why there are 10 child files with repeated DOB in them? Files after e seems empty for DOB's so what constitutes a child reported to be born in 2003 as 'child a' and a child born in the same year - 2003 for example- as 'child b'? The questionnaire asks the parent/guardian to input their DOB so I am unsure where the a-j come from? Everything else thereafter is split into these a-j categories so it is really important that I understand it- thank you so much.
Support #1354 (Resolved): Linking children to adults in Covid-19 studyhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/13542020-06-09T09:40:03Zjennie parnham

Hello,

I have been analysing the April wave of the Covid-19 data. I have come across trouble linking the children to adults using the Pidp.

Given all the pidp's on the child-level dataset (ca_schild_w) I can only link around half of the 4559 children to an adult(ca_indresp_w). Can every child on the child-level data be linked to an adult on the ca_indresep_w dataset?

I have tried using all the different versions of the pidp(1pg, m ,f, etc) to link with the adult pidp.

I need to link the children to income, geography, income variables and food insecurity variables. I have managed to link to adults on previous waves, but i also need data from the current wave

Question in related to participants' response for chronic conditions: Although the same questions were asked in wave 1, 4 & 7 in the UKHLS (“Has a doctor or other health professional ever told you that you have any of the conditions listed on this card? Please just tell me the numbers that apply”), individuals’ replies to the number of diagnosed health conditions showed a great different among wave1 and waves 4&7. In wave 4 and wave 7, most individuals replied “inapplicable” to this question. Why this happened?
Support #951 (Resolved): Deriving alcohol consumption unitshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/9512018-04-07T22:48:04Zjason morganjason.morgan@warwick.ac.uk

Dear USoc Team,

My research is examining the impact of alcohol consumption on individual earnings.

With regards to wave 7 of the Understanding Society dataset.
I was wondering if you could confirm for me whether the variable g_auditc4 (Drinks on a typical day) translates as units on a typical day or as any arbitrary definition of drink (e.g. could be a shot, could be a pint; with the definition of a standard drink often being 2.5 units). I am assuming it translates as units as the word drink appears to have implicitly been defined in the g_auditc5 (six or more drinks frequency) variable on the questionnaire where it says on page 557 “How often have you had 6 or more units on a single occasion in the last year? By a unit, I mean 1/2 pint of beer, a glass of wine or a single measure of spirit or liqueur.” but I’d be grateful if you could clarify this for me.

I'm therefore trying to derive a units consumed per week variable. My current approach has been to create a “Typical Units consumed per occasion” variable (TYPunits) which is the mean of the variable g_auditc4 (renamed to DrinkTypical) and then to create a “Weekly Drink Frequency” variable (DFx) which derives an approximation of the number of occasions the individual consumes alcohol per week using the variable g_auditc3 (renamed to DrinkFreq). I then multiply these two variables together to approximate a units consumed per week variable (i.e. multiplying the typical units an individual consume per occasion by their reported Weekly Drink Frequency). Of course depending on your answer to the first part of my question I will need to either multiply this number by 2.5, or redefine this variable to measure “drinks” consumed per week rather than units consumed per week. I have copied an excerpt from my STATA do-file related to the above explanation of how I’ve created this variable.
I’d be grateful for any thoughts on the above derivation or if there is a ‘standard’ or ‘official’ or more accurate method for deriving the number of units or drinks consumed by individuals in a given period.

Many thanks,

Jason Morgan

Do-File Excerpt - (Note: DrinkFreq = g_auditc3; and DrinkTypical = g_auditc4)
GENERATING ALCOHOL VARIABLES
*//creating a TYPunits variable
gen TYPunits = 0
replace TYPunits =1.5 if DrinkTypical 1
replace TYPunits =3.5 if DrinkTypical 2
replace TYPunits =5.5 if DrinkTypical 3
replace TYPunits =8 if DrinkTypical 4
replace TYPunits =10 if DrinkTypical ==5
gen TYPunitsSQ = TYPunits^2
label variable TYPunits "approximation of units typically consumed on drinking day"
label variable TYPunitsSQ "square of (approximation of units typically consumed on drinking day)"

*//creating a “Weekly Drink Frequency” or DF multiplier
gen DFx = 0 if DrinkFreq 1
replace DFx = .23 if DrinkFreq 2
replace DFx = .69 if DrinkFreq 3
replace DFx = 2.5 if DrinkFreq 4
replace DFx = 5.5 if DrinkFreq ==5
label values DFx DFx
label variable DFx "Weekly Drink Frequency derived from individual's stated drink frequency"

Example
So for example: if an individual typically consumes 3 drinks per occasion and 2-3 times per week, then
TYPunits = 3
DFx = 2.5
units = 3*2.5 = 7.5
Support #910 (Resolved): How to download NPD linked UKHLShttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/9102018-02-05T17:13:32Znirosha elsem varghese

We are analysing the wave 3 question ‘age you think when you leave home’ (lvhm). We noticed that there are a significant number of ‘don't knows’ recorded in the dataset and would like to learn more about them, for example if ‘don't know’ is given more often by certain ethnic groups. Thus we have a couple of questions:

1) Is the answer option ‘don’t know’ explicitly given TO THE RESPONDENT by the interviewer or is this option only recorded when the respondent says this spontaneously?
2) How do interviewers deal with respondents who have no intention to leave home (for whatever reason) – were the interviewers given special instructions?
Support #251 (Closed): Whether born in UK - all respondents at wave 2https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/2512014-03-21T17:41:27Zpeter tammes

Dear Sir / Madam

Where can we find information on whether an individual is born outside the UK for all adult individual respondents at wave 2? We have seen this data for those present at wave 1. We realise that for those that took part in wave 1 they will not be asked this again, and similarly BHPS participants will previously have been asked this. Therefore we had expected to have to use data from the xwavedat record when analysing wave 2 onwards. However when we look at the variable UKBORN from the xwavedat file from the most recent data deposit appears to have missing data for over 40,000 individuals. Please advise how to construct "uk born / non uk born" for all respondents.
