Redmine Support #2017 (Resolved): Inquiry on the setting on variables on volfreq and lactlhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20172023-12-19T12:07:37ZXinyu Tao

Dear officer,

I am looking at the variables indicating the volunteering. I noticed that 'volfreq' collected during waves 2,4,6,8,10 is available when 'volun' is yes, can I set the value of the 'volfreq' for individuals whose 'volun'is no as zero?

also, another variable 'lactl' indicates volunteering frequency during waves BH06, BH08, BH10, BH12, BH14, BH16, and BH18. I am wondering if any other variables indicating the volunteering were collected in the same waves as 'lactl'. In addition, can I set the missing values of 'lactl ' as zero?

Looking forward to hearing from you and many thanks for your time.

The variable search page on the understanding society website seems to have been updated recently and is no longer working well. I've tried multiple times to search various variables (either by their encoded name e.g. xpoily for oil and gas expenditure) or by using descriptive words, and in all cases I've tried so far the variable doesn't come up.

If it would be possible to try and figure out what's going wrong here, that would be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure it would be very helpful for other users if they're facing similar issues.

Dear officer,

I am looking at the data on the place of residence. I have one doubt which makes me a little bit confused. For instance, a person aged 23 who lived with his family in area A when he was a student, then only him moved to area B due to the working reason. I am wondering which place the person belongs to in this case.

Dear officer,

May I get access to the data on individuals' places of birth, and how specific is this geographic location? Can it be detailed to the local government district or even ward level?

If this kind of data can be applied, can you please let me know which dataset it is?

Dear officer,

I found no region of government indicator in the * *_youth files in BHPS. To solve this issue, I used the * *_hidp identifier in the files of * *_hhresp to merge with * *_youth files to get the information on the region of the government of youth files. Am I right in this way?
I also found that there was no sample in bk_youth, bl_youth and bm_youth for Northern Ireland. I am wondering if this was the case and the reason why.

Many thanks for your time.

Using the data management syntax available on your website, I was able to match parents with their children, and using those matched files, I was able to construct a matched and merged file for data concerning parents and their children. My research focuses on intergenerational mobility in Britain so it is important for me to have data for the variable paygu_dv across all waves. However, this yields an unbalanced panel, and unfortunately, doesn't allow me to run regressions because stata shows an error saying 'no observations' despite efforts to treat it as a panel. I understand that there may be missing data and inconsistencies but I've tried to include survey weights and conduct a weighted longitudinal analysis but that hasn't worked. I have also tried the tsspell command to potentially try and balance the panel and that hasn't worked either. I am just unsure if there is something I am missing. I saw a couple of other queries about a similar issue but I did not seem to understand the solution. I am incredibly sorry for my incompetence but I'm not sure how this issue can be resolved. Thanks in advance x
Support #1842 (Resolved): Inquiry on the data on place of birthhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18422023-01-19T07:26:59ZXinyu Tao

Dear Understanding Society Team,
I would like to inform you that my job market paper out of my dissertation (Essays In Immigration Economics) has been accepted at the Oxford Economics Papers.
I have now a few questions. First, I used 10 waves of the restricted UKHLS and merged them in one dataset. As a data provider, what information would you need about my upcoming publication, if any at all? Second, OEP asked for the dataset. I assume that I cannot make it available to them because it is restricted data. What can or should I provide them with instead?
I was using SN 6666 (local authority districts) and SN 6931 (main data), Waves 1-10.
Thanks,
Nico Ochmann
Support #1814 (Resolved): "inapplicable" in sempderived variablehttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18142022-11-22T13:21:55ZClaire Wu

Dear support team,

I have a question about the "semderived" variable in the Covid-19 study. I intend to create a binary variable that includes people who are in paid employment and people who are not employed. However, I am very confused as to what the "not applicable" category represents in this variable. Are these people not employed?

Thank you very much for your help!

I have noticed that in i_indresp_ip there are the following variables available:

Individual interview start time (hours)
Individual interview start time (minutes)
Individual interview start time (seconds)
Interview start date (year)
Interview start date (month)
Interview start date (day)
Time at end of individual interview (hours)
Time at end of individual interview (minutes)
Time at end of individual interview (seconds)

Unfortunately, interview end date is not available. I can see from data that at least on 64 occasions “interview” ended not on the same day which is expected with online mode of data collection. Unfortunately, I do not know how many days lapsed between the beginning and the end. Is there a chance to get interview end date (year, month, day) variables?

Hi,

Are there boost samples for ethnic in Innovation panel? Since I cannot find the information about it, thank you.
Besides, I've checked a_psnenip_xd (cross-sectional person design weight), the value ranged from 1 to 4. However, the frequency table on the website is only 1, I would like to know what make them different, thank you. And since the Innovation Panel sample is a equal probability design, why there are different design weights for individuals. Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks for previous answers.

However,I still have a problem on design weight for both original sample and refreshment sample.According to previous feedback, it is stated "Essentially, considering the longitudinal structure of the data and recognizing that attrition occurs between waves 1 and 4, we do not provide separate design weight. But if it helps, IP (both original and refreshment) have almost an equal probability sample designs."

In the IP1 data set, the variable "a_psnenip_xd" shows that the design weight is from 1 to 4. So for refreshment sample in IP4, should I use 1 as design weight or other amount(from 1 to 4)? Thank you so much.
Support #277 (Closed): Wave 2 Results from Methodological Experimentshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/2772014-06-30T18:20:03ZHsin Chen

When I was reading "Understanding Society Innovation Panel Wave 2 Results from Methodological Experiments" I tried to compare the the response in the report with the data set. I have a question about the data. According to the paper, the total sample size for the experiment on interview mode is 2,100. However, I tried to run the data set and filtered out samples who are less than 16, the total sample size was 2,148. I know there were 37 allocation errors happened during interviewing, however, there were still 11 samples not shown in the table. I would like to know whether I missed to filter unqualified sample, if so, what type of sample was been removed, thanks.
Support #272 (Closed): Questions about IP1 and IP4.https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/2722014-06-20T07:16:03ZHsin Chen

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Hsin, a postgraduate student in the Univeirsty of Manchester. I used Innovation Panel as my data set for my dissertation, and I have fronted some problems.

One is the missing data. Due to my topic, I need to merge data (1) IP1 and IP2 individual (2) IP4 and IP5 individuals. However, after I proceed the merging, there are 1031 and 637 missing respectively. I also tried to merge only (1) IP1 "full productive interview" individual and IP2 all individual (2) IP4 "full productive interview" and IP5 all indivudals, still, there are 600 and 329 missing relatively. I could not understand the reason why cross wave personal id of respondents in IP1 or IP4 doesn't exist in IP2 or IP5.

Another issue is about "design weight". I could not find the design weight for IP4 refreshment sample.

Thank you for your kindly help.
Support #233 (Closed): variables locationhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/2332014-01-11T09:33:10ZQueena Wong

Hi,

I am using the British Household Panel Survey for my research about income and well being.
I found the life satisfaction variable I am intended to use - wLFSATO on the BHPS codebook. However, after I downloaded the dataset from the UK archive, the variable is not in the dataset and I have checked every single file. Apart from the satisfaction variable, other variables does not seem to match with the website codebook either. Would you please help to locate the variables or tell me what I should do?

Thanks in advance,
Queena
