Redmine Support #2015 (Resolved): Death information and death date + linked health data + US COVID-19 surveyhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20152023-12-19T09:20:17ZAlexander Labeit

Dear Understanding Society Team,

In US death information is available via the variables dcsedfl_dv (respondent reported deceased) and dcsedw_dv (wave respondent deceased). This means death info is only on the wave-level available and some deaths could be missed.

For linked health data
https://ukllc.ac.uk/datasets
which should be also valid for the Understanding Society COVID-19 survey:
death info and date should be available from Civil Registrations of Deaths (England & Wales)
If a respondent has permitted health data linkage (info stored in ch_cvhlthlink):
For US data linked via the Covid survey death info and date should be available for England after the health data linkage permission date (but not before the permission date because the respondent has already died and cannot given permission anymore).

Is this linked data similar/identical to what is described In linked HES-ONS mortality data?
https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/data-tools-and-services/data-services/linked-hes-ons-mortality-data
Support #2014 (Resolved): Scottish health datahttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20142023-12-19T09:02:45ZAlexander Labeit

your website
https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/data-releases
states that Linked health data for Scotland will be released in 2023.
Is this the case or not valid anymore or for the near future?
Support #1963 (Resolved): Missing LSOA for hidp across waveshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/19632023-09-01T13:46:07ZRichard Belcher

Hello,

I have been granted a special license to access the hidp LSOA codes. I am conducting a nationally representative analysis on waves 1-9, and using data calculated from a respondents LSOA is essential to my analysis. However, I have found some hidps that have non-zero yearly cross sectional weights (134) do not have a corresponding LSOA code. I am wondering if this is a known issue or something that could/has been fixed, and the best way to deal with it whilst still conducting a nationally representative analysis. Some extra information is that this issue seem to be evenly distributed across waves 1-9.

All the best,

Hello,

I have been using the 2011 census LSOA and MSOA codes and the LAD codes from the Special License Access datasets (SN 7248, 7249 and 6666).

When I merge the datasets for waves 1-11, matching on hidp and wave, to create a dataset with all three area identifiers, I find that there is much more missing data on MSOA. For LSOA and LAD there is only 1 observation with a code of -9, compared to 17,903 observations for MSOA.

Could you explain why this is?

Thanks very much.

I am emailing to enquire about a forthcoming linked dataset mentioned on your website, namely “linked credit history (FCA) data for will be released in 2023”.

I was interested in learning more about what FCA credit history data is being linked to the BHPS-US data, and over what time period. E.g. does the linkage include the regulated mortgage data collected by the FCA (i.e. the Product Sales Database).

I also was interested in knowing when in 2023 these new linked data will be available?
Support #1898 (Resolved): Link respondents to Westminster electoral constituencieshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18982023-04-27T14:54:19ZMargherita Negri

Hello, I would like to be able to link respondents in a given wave to Westminster electoral constituencies for the last election before the interview was done. I can do it using postcodes, but I was wondering if there is any easier way that does not require me to use Security Data Access? Thank you.
Support #1880 (Resolved): Smart meter datahttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18802023-03-21T16:11:47ZNatalie Bennett

Hi

I recently attended a UKHLS event where it was mentioned that Smart Meter data for participants might be made available in the near future.

I was wondering if this is still happening and if so when the data might become available?

Many thanks

Dear Understanding Society team,

I hope this email finds you well. I'm reaching out with a couple of specific questions about the Understanding Society study which will hopefully be quick to answer.

Does the Understanding Society cohort include a subset of participants who have given consent to be recontacted regarding participation in further research?

The context behind this is that Akrivia Health are working in partnership with Cardiff University and the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) on the Precision Neuroscience Research Initiative - a programme of work to establish a precision neuropsychiatry data- and bioresource (more details can be found in the attached project summary). Our goal with this resource is to accelerate research into mental health disorders and cognitive function, hopefully leading to exciting and innovative precision treatment development for dementias, bipolar, depression and psychosis. Recruitment for the program is underway in NHS secondary mental health care, and expansion is underway into primary care, but we are keen to open up participation to any existing patient groups with interest in mental health and dementias research.

Do you think participants in the Understanding Society cohort might be interested in hearing more about the Precision Neuroscience Research Initiative? If so, would there be a viable route to share this information with them? Let me know your thoughts - if helpful I'd be happy to arrange a quick 20 minute call in the next week or two to review the project in a little more detail.

With kind regards,

Hello,

I am currently working on a project looking at inequalities in stroke care access and outcomes in partnership with a local NHS Trust and am looking to check if data linkage between Understanding Society and health administrative data on Stroke would be possible and if there are any similar data links already available that I might have missed? Alternatively, what would the process of creating this linkage entail in terms of seeking consent, anonymizing, etc and what would the timeframe for such a process be?

Hi,

In the special licenced dataset that includes 2011 Census Lower Layer Super Output Areas, what spatial scale are Scottish areas shown in? The UK Datatservice side does not provide anymore details but LSOAs do not exist for Scotland. I assume it is 2001 Datazones instead?

Dear Sir/Madam,

Together with co-authors I am working on a project about the effect of school closures during the pandemic on student outcomes. Details of the project are here:
https://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/project/covid-19-and-the-impact-of-school-closure

As part of the project, we have obtained the school-level data on attendance collected during the pandemic (COVID-19 attendance data). We have matched this with publicly available information on infection rates, school characteristics and socio-economic characteristics at regional level (LSOA or MSOA). We collected data ourselves on Local Authority (LA) announcements and advice, and central government guidance and legislation when this varies locally. Our idea is to evaluate the importance of variation in these policies on pupil attendance (net of all the other factors) and to evaluate what impact this had on student outcomes.

We have successfully applied to DfE to use the NPD (together with this matched data) for our project on the SRS. I am writing because we would very much like to conduct a similar analysis using Understanding Society (via the SDS). We would be very interested in evaluating whether young people’s attitudes and behaviour (as measured in the self-completion survey) were impacted by enforced absence from school (via the effects of national and regional policies).

To do this, we would need to request that COVID-19 attendance data (at school level) as well as other regional-level information be matched up to relevant waves of the young person’s survey. I don’t know if you include a URN code within the survey (I’m guessing you don’t!) So I was wondering whether you would consider an application where such matching was done for us and then annoymised school identifiers provided. Also, I was wondering if they survey includes any regional information (like LSOA or MSOA codes).

It would be very helpful to have more information before we make a formal application for the data and I would be happy to talk over the phone or online if it would be easier.

Best wishes,

My name is Anil Menon. My co-author and I are currently using the Understanding Society data for a project and am wondering if researchers might be allowed access to respondent geographic data more fine-grained than region (currently available in the downloadable data). We would of course be willing to sign any research ethics documentation as necessary and would only be using this information in the aggregate for research purposes.
Support #1737 (Resolved): Linkage of Understanding Society (BHPS) data to Cancer Registrationshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/17372022-08-02T13:32:39ZLaura Woods

Hi there

I'm looking to developing a study about cancer and subjective social class (variable opcls2, Subjective social class membership, indresp BH01, BH06, BH10, BH15).

I understand that linkage to the Cancer Registration data is pending - could you give me an update on the progress of this and whether registrations post 2005 (for example, 2006-2021) could be provided alongside variable opcls2?
