Hello, I plan to analyse the Understanding society wave 5 data (e_indresp) and need to add the 'racel_dv' variable available in the 'xivdata' file so that I can look into health status by ethnicity. I am wondering what is the common identifier to merge the new variable into the 'e_indresp' file. The variable 'intnum' for interviewer id number is available in the xivdata file but the 'e_indresp' datafile do not have any such variable. Please suggest what steps I need to take to add the ethnicity information in the wave5 individual respondent data.
Support #460 (Closed): Language variableshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/4602015-12-01T17:20:09ZJoanna Clifton-SpriggJ.M.Clifton-Sprigg@bath.ac.uk

I am interested in exploring the information related to respondents' language in Understanding Society.

It is clear from the documentation that in case of adults (age 16+):
- there was a question on childhood language in Wave 2
- there were questions whether English is the respondent's first language and if not, on difficulty in speaking/reading/understanding English (Wave 3 and 5)

Can I clarify that there is no question asking if the respondents speaks a language other than English at home?

Moreover, is there any question which would indicate what language is used by respondent's children or by the household in general?

I would greatly appreciate your help on this matter.
Support #457 (Closed): ethnicityhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/4572015-11-30T13:25:09Zangela potter-collinsangela.potter-collins@ons.gsi.gov.ukSupport #376 (Closed): Ethnicity and Associated Studieshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/3762015-05-15T13:30:31ZRosalind Willis

I have a question about the Associated Studies aspect of Understanding Society. I understand that the sample available for the Associated Studies is the Innovation Panel. Can I please check whether the Innovation Panel includes a large sample of people from minority ethnic groups? From my reading of the website I think that it does not, but I’d like to double check.

If not, is there any alternative way of engaging with the data collection of the minority ethnic boost sample?

Hi,

we are currently thinking of a few studies with recent immigrants and would like to first see what we can do with existing databeses. We would be most grateful if you could help us with the following questions:

1. From the existing database in understanding society, is it possible to get participants' (recruited from boosted ethnic gorups) plasma oxytocin level (which is measured from blood)?
2. For these people, is it possible to contact them to get psychological measures over some time period (separate from the understanding society survey)?
3. How many of the recruited ethnic minorities can be calssified as relatively recent immigrants (arrived in the last 1-3 years)?

Apologies of some of these quetsions fall outside of what you can answer. I wasn't sure how detailed your answers can be.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Dear all,

I want to analyse partnership formation and dissolution in regard of endogamous and exogamous partnerships. I found the partner's place of birth and ethnicity group for people who are in a relationship at the first wave by identifying the couples in the same household.

My question is if there is any information of previous partners? So far I only found the complete partnership history for marriages and cohabiting spells, but no further information on the previous partner. I assume this information is not available but I wanted to make sure before I give up on that issue.

I want to use the variable race/migration in my study. All that I find is "race" and "racel" in the xwavedat file. As far as I understand, this variable is for each person only in the year of the first interview in the dataset. Is there a variable available which has imputet the values for each wave? Or is a documentation available how to easily impute the values for each wave?
Thanks!
Support #305 (Closed): Mixed race sample in wave 1 and 2https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/3052014-09-25T18:33:04ZJo-Pei Tanj.tan@mmu.ac.uk

Hello, I hope you can help me. I have downloaded waves 1and 2 in SPSS format.

I am interested to look at mixed race individuals and the variables that I am intested are located in both waves.

I would like to know how many of the mixed parentage respondents from W1 (var name: a_race1) are followed in Wave 2 (var name: b_race1)?

I also found a huge discrepancy in the number of mixed race respondents between these 2 waves. Is that possible?

Will it be possible to find out what is the identifier?

Thanks for your time.

Hello,

I noticed that for some observations there is a mismatch for the ethnicity variables between the files a_indall and a_indresp.
For example some individuals that are Indian according to the indresp file, result Pakistani according to the indall file.
I would like to understand the reason for the mismatch.
I know that the indresp file registers the interviewees'responses to the individual questionnaire, but what does the indall file register? Is it directly compiled by the interviewers?
Thank you
Support #147 (Closed): What is the difference between a_racel and a_ethnic variables?
Hey!

I am working on Wave-1 and looking into ethnicity. The issue is that whenever for example, I tabulate total %of Pakistani I am given two different quantities by two different variables, through a_racel, I am getting 1435, while by a_ethnic3 I am getting 1715. This is very confusing as both the variables have same categories, I don't know which one to choose??? Plus, I looked around at your website and found that the a_ethnic3 is a part of ethnic boost sample. If its true what does it means? And which figures of ethnicity shall I follow? I want to work with all the ethnic groups, including White population, have to link them with BHPS and other surveys.

Dear Understanding Society Team,Dear All,
I am trying to with the Understanding Society data wave 2. I am mainly interested in differences between ethnic groups.

I have a problem when using wave 2 and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. The data documentation (user guide etc) did not help me at all with this, nor does emailing info@understandingsociety.ac.uk . The only response I received was to post my question here, and the response was not signed by a person. I'd be really grateful for any help!

I am interested in the individual level, not the household at this point. So I am using the b-indresp data file. I am trying to use the ethnic booster sample in wave 2. When requesting the frequencies of the household origin variable, the the output tells me that 5598 respondents are members of the ethnic booster sample.
However, when I then request the frequencies for the ethnic group indicator variable b_racel , then I get the following: 46811 respondents are in a category called ' inapplicable' and 3882 respondents are in a category called 'proxy'. However, the numbers of respondents belonging to each ethnic category of that variable (b_racel) are far too small, they are nowhere near the 1000+ respondents that (according to the userguide) were sampled for each ethnic group.
My questions are thus:
1. what does the category ,inapplicable' mean? Who is in that category and why is this category part of the ethnic minority variable? (this category is not part of the ethnic minority variable in wave 1). Unfortunately I did not find the answer in the data documentation.
2. what does the category 'proxy' mean?
3. where is the ethnic booster? How can I get the ethnic booster and what do I need to do to obtain the numbers of respondents belonging to each ethnic group using the 2nd wave of 'Understanding society'? How can I get the numbers of respondents belonging to each ethnic group? Requesting the frequencies of variable b_racel does not work.

I can get the ethnic booster without problems in wave 1 but not in wave 2.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Best,
Stef
Support #43 (Closed): Weighting-related questionshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/432012-04-29T23:39:13ZSung Park

Hello: I have various weighting-related questions, which I have tried to list by similarity below:

1) What are the distinctions between the analysis weight and the design weight, as described in the user manual ? For example, what is the distinction between a_ind5mus_xw and a_ind5mus_xd as it relates to individual-level weights? I ask in order to determine whether the design weight is relevant to my analysis (some of which may be inferred from the subsequent questions below).

2) If I am conducting an individual-level analysis of respondents in the ethnic boost sample, but ALL the variables (both independent and dependent variables) I am including in my analysis are NOT specific to the extra 5 minutes of questions (such as sex, # children, household size, employment), would I still use the weight a_ind5mus_xw?

3) I notice that the psu and strata variables (a_psu_dv and a_strata_dv) are available only in the household file (hhresp). If I am doing individual-level analyses, if I just append these variables (psu and strata) to the individual-level (indresp) by merging on a_hidp, is this a valid way to be able to adjust for the sampling design in my analysis which is at an individual-level?

4) If I am combining ethnic respondents from the ethnic boost sample, as well as from the general comparison group (those ethnic minorities who live in low-density areas) for an individual-level analysis, is it sufficient to adjust for sampling design by selecting the a_ind5mus_xw weight, as well as adjusting for sampling, stratification and clustering by a_psu_dv, a_strata_dv and a_hidp, respectively?
Support #32 (Closed): Individual and Household Weights for combining EMBS plus ethnic minority in...https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/322012-03-15T12:51:28ZSung Park

I am interested in conducting 3 analyses:
1) an analysis that compares all UK ethnic respondents (both from the EMBS and within GPS) compared to non-minority white respondents in the GPS
2) same as above, but comparing each of the 5 ethnic groups in the UK (both from the EMBS and within GPS) compared to non-minority white respondents in the GPS
3) comparing across each of the 5 ethnic groups from the EMBS only

In the working paper regarding weighting strategy for the study (pages 9-10), you mention providing many different weights. I was wondering if you could tell me which weighting variables I could use for my analysis above? In other words, I'm unsure of the weights to use in analyzing:
1) The EMBS plus ethnic minority individuals in the UKHLS-GPS in areas of low ethnic minority density, i.e. the areas excluded from the boost sample (to represent the total UK ethnic minority population);
2) Each of the five main ethnic groups separately from the combined EMBS plus ethnic minority individuals in the UKHLS-GPS
3) Each of the five main ethnic groups separately from the EMBS

at both a) the individual level and b) household level?
