Redmine Support #2011 (Resolved): BHPS and Understanding Society Dataset Variableshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20112023-12-14T09:12:25ZJoe Mcilwaine

Hi, quick question. I am just wondering if either (or both) of these datasets contain variables on social class, similar to those present in the 1958 and 1970 birth cohort studies? I have not been able to find any but wanted to ask before completely ruling it out. Thanks!
Support #1922 (Resolved): Care Homehttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/19222023-06-14T08:03:50ZJoshua Parry

Understanding Society states, 'Sample is not selected from institutions such as care homes but if sample members move into care homes they are interviewed if allowed'. How do i find out how many are interviewed in care homes?
Support #1814 (Resolved): "inapplicable" in sempderived variablehttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18142022-11-22T13:21:55ZClaire Wu

Dear support team,

I have a question about the "semderived" variable in the Covid-19 study. I intend to create a binary variable that includes people who are in paid employment and people who are not employed. However, I am very confused as to what the "not applicable" category represents in this variable. Are these people not employed?

Thank you very much for your help!

My name is Andrew Schein, and I'm the lead behavioural scientist for the Sustainable Future mission of Nesta, a UK charity focused on promoting innovation across a broad range of sectors. We're planning to run a survey with a partner, asking a group of their customers questions about their heating and energy use behaviours. The ultimate aim is to provide better energy-saving tips and feedback.

We want to compare our survey respondents' answers to a few key questions to the Understanding Society proportions for England, GB, or UK to the same questions. Does Understanding Society have the ability to send the topline (aggregate) figures for this limited set of questions?

The questions we have in mind (in approximate order of priority) are:
Hsbeds: "I would like to ask you a few questions about your household's accommodation. How many bedrooms are there here excluding any bedrooms you may let or sublet?"
Hsownd: “Does your household own this accommodation outright, is it being bought with a mortgage, is it rented or does it come rent-free?”
Cduse: “Could you please tell me which of the following items you have in your (part of the) accommodation. Just tell me the numbers that apply.”
Fuelhave: “Which of the following types of domestic fuel do you have in your accommodation? Please select all that apply”
Fuelduel: “Do you pay your gas and electric as one bill or separately?”
Duelpay: “How do you pay for your gas and electricity?”
Ncars: “How many cars or vans in total does your household own or have continuous use of?”
Hsctax (Council tax band of accommodation)
Support #1801 (Resolved): Belong to religion oprlg variable: many missings https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/18012022-11-07T10:21:22ZMichaela Kyclova

Dear Understanding Society team,
I am wondering why there is many missing/inapplicable responses to oprlg in later waves? Whilst in Wave 1, no inapplicable answers are coded, in later waves, this is between 80-90%. Even when merging with Wave 1 responses, or using the fed forward variable, I still have around 50% of values missing for adults at different waves. I am working with a created dataset of children and their parents, and using either the mother's or father's religion still yields a lot of missing responses. I will appreciate any guidance on how to figure this out; and how to properly code no religion vs missing values.
Thank you so much,
Michaela
Support #1778 (Resolved): Asking about confusing variable in the birth date in UKHLShttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/17782022-10-07T14:06:58ZYi Wu

We have some questions about the variable, birth date in the ukhls dataset since WAVE 1
For example, for the Year of birth, all these variables are included in the dataset, but the value are inconsistent, such as
birthy: year of birth;
doby_dv: DOB: Year, derived
dcdoby: correct dob year

Corresponding to the birth date difference, there are different age for the same individual.
May I know which variable I should use to interpret the real date of birth for individuals?
Support #1660 (Resolved): Attitudes towards immigration (self-comp) in Wave 11https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/16602022-02-11T12:27:52ZMaria Abreu

The long-term content plan document appears to show that a module on attitudes towards immigration was planned for Wave 11 (self-completion questionnaire), however, I can't find it in the data sets, or in the questionnaires / list of variables.

Please could you let me know if this module has been postponed to a future wave, or whether it has been dropped altogether? Or perhaps I'm missing something in the current wave?
Support #1191 (Resolved): Availability of requested variableshttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/11912019-05-14T10:29:33ZMandy Meijer

Dear all,

A few weeks ago we requested data of the UKHSL study, since we think this provides a valuable data source for answering scientific questions.

However, the METADAC told us that we requested non-existing data variables, but did not provide specific comments. Since we selected all the variables from your website, we were a little bit confused about this message and I hoped that someone here could help us with identifying the non-existing variables. I attached the list of requested variables.

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Dear all,
I would like to know your opinion about the following issue: I am working with all the waves of BHPS + US, and I need to run some analyses on dependent variables measuring the mental well-being, psychological health or something similar.

In this sense, the only variable that I was able to find in both surveys is the Subjective wellbeing (GHQ). Is there any other variable related to this 'symptom' which is harmonized (and as such usable) in both surveys?

Dear Support Team,

I am looking for the total number of siblings of a given respondent (gender is irrelevant).

I could not find it, and I am not sure if there is information available to derive such a variable.

Your help is much appreciated.

Best wishes.

Hi, I was looking into job history file (JOBHIST) for BHPS. I was wondering why so many respondents in the main individual record file (INDRESP) does not show up in job history file. Even after restricting the sample to those working on the interview reference week, still more than half of them do not show up in job history file. I was wondering if this module was asked on the subsample, and if it was, then how the subsample was selected.

Hi, I was looking for whether any BHPS interview was translated in any other language than english. I found the variable for UKHLS dataset, but I could not find such variable for BHPS. I just found a variable indicating whether interview was interrupted due to language problem and the indicator for interview refusal due to english problem.

So I guessed that BHPS interview was done only in english, and the translation was not provided for any respondents. I wish to confirm this fact from data depositor, as I could not find such explanation from elsewhere. I will really appreciate if you could confirm whether BHPS was only done only in English.

I wonder why the question if someone thinks UK should remain/leave the EU is not asked in W7, but next year in W8?

Is the published W7 questionnaire maybe an outdated version? Will there be a variable with information about a person voted at the referendum and if yes, whether he/she voted remain or leave?

Dear Support Team,
I'm currently looking for a variable that could proxy an individual's working experience. I found the variable 'kleslen' (lenght of employment history spell (months)) in datafile KLIFEMST of BHPS.
However, I find it difficult to interpret the fact that PID variable repeats itself and gives different results for 'kleslen'. For example, the first 2 rows in the screenshot attached for pid 952000258 produce different figures for 'kleslen' : 45 and 609.
Could you please comment on that because I find it a little misleading.
Many thanks in advance!
Support #434 (Closed): "None of the above" in `w'_qfhighhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/4342015-10-16T20:30:13ZYujung Whangyujung.whang@yale.edu

Hi, I have a question about 96 "None of the Above" category in `w'_qfhigh variable (highest educational qualification)
I found quite many people chose this category as their answers..

May I consider this category as "Below high school degree or equivalent" ?
