Redmine Support #2057 (Feedback): What is ficode measuring? https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20572024-02-21T15:36:10ZMaya Middleton-Welch

Hello

My understanding is that the variable ficode https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/variables/ficode/ is measuring the specific benefits received by individuals.
Please can I just confirm that my understanding is correct? I was wanted to check because I wasn't sure why this is recorded as a separate variable when questions asking people what benefits do they receive are already asked.

Is it the case that if an individual is receiving a combination of benefits they were will be recorded as having the relevant different benefit income codes? I saw that the website totals up the percentage of people to 100%, but I would have thought that this would add up to more than 100% if some people had a combination of different benefit income codes so just wanted to check?

Thanks in advance
Support #2026 (Resolved): expenditure in UKHLShttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20262024-01-08T14:02:28ZJane Fry

Hi,
I am new to Understanding Society/UKHLS but have used the Australian HILDA dataset, which is very similar. I gather there is expenditure data collected in UKHLS but have only managed to find food, alcohol and energy variables. Are there any other types of expenditure included in the survey? If so, where can I find them?
Thanks.
Support #2025 (Resolved): expenditure in UKHLShttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/20252024-01-08T13:58:15ZJane Fry

Dear officer,

I am looking at the variables indicating the volunteering. I noticed that 'volfreq' collected during waves 2,4,6,8,10 is available when 'volun' is yes, can I set the value of the 'volfreq' for individuals whose 'volun'is no as zero?

also, another variable 'lactl' indicates volunteering frequency during waves BH06, BH08, BH10, BH12, BH14, BH16, and BH18. I am wondering if any other variables indicating the volunteering were collected in the same waves as 'lactl'. In addition, can I set the missing values of 'lactl ' as zero?

Looking forward to hearing from you and many thanks for your time.

Hi, quick question. I am just wondering if either (or both) of these datasets contain variables on social class, similar to those present in the 1958 and 1970 birth cohort studies? I have not been able to find any but wanted to ask before completely ruling it out.
I'm wondering is there a socio-economic status indicator for those aged 16/17? As highest educational attainment/ job status is not an applicable SES indicator for adolescents. I see there is the variable masoc90 and pasoc90, but is there a variable for parent's highest educational attainment or another SES indicator?
Hi,

I am preparing to analyse the take up of maternity/paternity leave among parents of children born into UKHLS.
Having looked at the routing for question matlv & matleave, I realised that questions about these two types of leave are either asked of those coded as "newmum" or "newdad", or of females (for matleave).
Newmum/newdad identifies only whether one is a biological parent of a child.
What happens in case of adoption? Are adoptive parents asked maternity/paternity leave question?
By law they are entitled to adoption leave which closely resembles maternity leave.
Support #1989 (Resolved): inapplicable ukbornhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/19892023-11-01T10:19:15ZAelen Valen

Hi, what does "inapplicable" suggest? Why there are 96.66% of inapplicable replies to "ukborn"? Thanks
Support #1988 (Resolved): Jbbgdat variablehttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/19882023-10-27T07:17:28ZAlena Oxenham

Hello,

I am trying to look at participants' start date of their current job. In the Wave 12 questionnaire, it looks like "jbbgdat" was used, however I can't find this variable in my dataset or in the variable search tool. I looked at the jbbgd/m/y variables, but they have ~98% inapplicable responses. Was jbbgdat included in Wave 12 or any previous waves? Or is there a different variable I should be using to look at employment start dates?

Dear Sir/madam,

I wonder what is jbsoc90ly_cc? And where does this variable derive from?
If possible, is there any way you suggest to identify a transition between occupations in two consecutive years?

Hi,

I previously asked a question about this (#1955) but wasn't able to clear it up completely.

I was wondering why vote8 wasn't asked of respondents in wave 3 to 6? Am I missing something? This would seem important for those interviewed before the election in wave 2 (and who therefore weren't asked the question) as well as new joiners.

I just wanted to understand in advance whether the USoC dataset that we are hoping to gain access to will have an individual's degree subject studied. From looking at the questionnaire, I cannot see this as a variable that is included but have also seen that the education records of the survey participants are combined with the results.

We are hoping to minimise delays so if we cannot access degree subject studied we'll look at a different dataset. Therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if you have any information about whether or not this variable is included at any stage in the dataset.
Support #1924 (Resolved): Control for mother/father educhttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/19242023-06-18T11:48:55ZPauline Bucherpeb49@cam.ac.uk

I am a Research Fellow at Cardiff University working on a project funded by Healthy Working Wales (HWW) of Public Health Wales (PHW). Over the last few years, commissioned by PHW, the project team have developed and piloted an online 'employee tool'; a survey that, once completed, is reported back to employers and can be used to understand the health and wellbeing needs of their workforce. We have used and adapted questions from a number of national and international surveys, including UKLHS. We are now in the second phase of the project whereby we are exploring the possibility of providing employers with national and regional benchmarks within the reports they receive.

We are basing our recommendations on whether to utilise data from different surveys for benchmarking purposes on a number of qualitative criteria. It would be incredibly useful to have a conversation with someone involved in the development and analysis of UKLHS.
