I would like to ask where I can find “device used” variable in Wave 7 of Understanding Society. I was also not able to locate variables which record devices available to the respondent (I am aware that this information was collected in the Wave 7 of the main survey). I checked all files but did not manage to locate any of these variables.

I would also like to ask what the coding “3” mean in g-indall file, “mode of completion of household grid” variable.
I'm in a very urgent/immediate situation so if you could direct me or find me a dataset (or tell me how to find it) that looks at (young) people use of social media and its impact on mental health that would be very appreciated, it's for a project where I have to use the R software to compute statistics and show that my analysis helps (or not) to extent knowledge on the research problem (in my case the correlation between the use of social media and mental health).

my tutor suggested I came through your institution and after spending 2 days in your website I have given up, there is so much stuff. my tutor tells me first:

'Did you find any information on the variables you need through US?'

I had no clue what he meant, I guessed I would be interested in variables such as age? nationality? gender? ethnicity or as many variables as I want, based on my specific interest.

His reply was:

'The understanding society dataset is huge so in the first instance you would need to identify where the bits you need are. Look for a “code book” or other guide to the variables. You’re looking specifically for variable names and for the file name containing them. I can help with fiddly aspects of loading this into R but you need to go through the administrative side of getting to grips with what’s in the dataset'

I went as far as finding this page, then I get lost, when I click on some of the links I get e.g. 'variable 160'...what does it mean? that that study has 160 variables and I have to know what to unpick based on my want/need?

sorry if I'm asking silly questions but I have been chucked into a stats course and hve little knowledge and understanding. can you help? many thanks in advance. danilo
Understanding Society User Support - Support #892 (Resolved): Wave 7 Variables: nutrition_w7, sca...https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/8922018-01-05T13:48:39ZEmma Cookemma.cook@student.manchester.ac.uk

Good afternoon,

I apologise in advance if this is simply down to my inexperience with the data set, but I'm trying to download Wave 7 in order to analyse the variables Nutrition, Scawembs (mood) and Exercise.
I've registered with the UK Data Service and have downloaded: "SN: 6614 Understanding Society: Waves 1-7, 2009-2016 and Harmonised BHPS: Waves 1-18, 1991-2009", but I cannot find the variables I am looking for.

Please would you let me know where I am going wrong?

Many thanks,

Hello,

I've recently downloaded the wave 7 data, but am struggling to replicate results that I had by using previous versions of the data. I'm looking specifically at the wave 6 data, I know that this is probably to be expected as the data has changed in some cases, but I was hoping you could confirm that I would not get the same results.

The area i'm interested in is household income. I've done joins (using f_hidp) to compare the f_hhnetic1 that we previously held and the new f_fihhmnnet1_dv variable. These very rarely match, and from the documentation am struggling to account for these differences. Is there anything you can point towards?

Thanks in advance,

My query relates to the SDQ variable scales. It is my understanding that the total SDQ score is calculated by summing four subscales, relating to conduct problems; emotional symptoms; hyperactivity and inattention; and peer relationship problems. Each of these subscales are scored from 0-10, with the total difficulties score scored from 0-40. While attempting to subset the total difficulties variable (g_ypsdqtv_dv), I noticed that the scores are much higher than expected, ranging from 25-75. The subscales related to conduct problems (g_ypsdqcp_dv), hyperactivity and inattention (g_ypsdqha_dv) and peer relationship problems (g_ypsdqpp_dv) also contain scores higher than the expected 0-10. Has there been any change to the scales used to calculate the SDQ scores?
Understanding Society User Support - Support #889 (Resolved): Wave 2 main interview & nurse asses...https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/8892017-12-11T11:48:32ZRachel Bennett

I am interested in using the wave 2 main interview data linked to the nurse assessment data on biomarkers for this sample only (i.e. I am only interested in the GPS sample, not combining with the BHPS sample who had their nurse assessment after wave 3). I understand from the Nurse Assessment user guide that I should use the weight variable 'b_indnsus_xw' for this type of analysis. However I cannot seem to find this variable in the wave 2 main data or the nurse's assessment data. Would you be able to advise where it can be found?
Hi, I would like to know if the NPD data linked to Understanding Society includes measures of teacher reports of ability, level pupil working towards, and progress. The data linkage page doesn't explicitly state that these variables are available, but I imagine that they may fall under the category of 'attainment' that is listed on the website. Any help that you can provide would be gratefully received. tim
Understanding Society User Support - Support #887 (Resolved): Treatment of student sample membershttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/8872017-12-06T02:53:26ZLewis Andersonlewis.anderson@sociology.ox.ac.uk

Hello,

I have some questions about how the study treats sample members who are university students. Is there any guide to this issue? Apologies if so - I haven't been able to find anything relevant.

In particular: if a household member moves away from home and into student accommodation for (most of) the academic year, do they continue to be treated as a household member (as if they had continued to live at home)? Or is this treated as them forming a new household? If so - would this be a household of 1, or are those they live with surveyed as TSMs? The substantive concern is that I am interested in the measurement of students' incomes and so how they are treated affects the meaning of the household income variables.

Dear Peter,
I have a few more questions with regard to my original support #758.
1. When I generate my new weighting variable, newwgt, 600 observations in my estimation sample are assigned a zero meaning they are dropped. Why do you guys assign zero weights in w_indinus, w_indinub, etc. ?
2. The sample mean of my newwgt is 1.1 with a s.d. of 0.58. Does this look reasonable to you as in theory the mean should be 1.
3. Does USoc normalize weights so that N observations in weighted data equal N observations in unweighted data? It seems to me that you guys do that.
4. Given the normalization, how would I find the number of weighted and unweighted observations with Stata for my estimation sample?
Understanding Society User Support - Support #775 (Feedback): Nurse interviewer ID number 9999https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/7752017-05-06T13:32:23ZFiona Pashazadeh

Dear Understanding Society Team,

In the nurse visit file for wave 2 individuals, b_indsamp_ns, there are 3827 records with nurse interviewer ID 9999 (b_nsintnum). It looks as though this ID was applied to those who refused the nurse visit at the CATI stage or were out of scope/ineligible at CATI, but the numbers do not quite match up (e.g. some households and individuals recorded as CATI refusals have nurse IDs that correspond to nurses in the xivdata_ns file).

Please could you confirm the criteria for applying nurse interviewer ID 9999?

Thanks,

I have a couple more very small queries following on from our analysis; these are mainly for re-assurance that we’ve done things correctly.

1) With regard to the Youth data, is it ok to combine BHPS and USOC? We couldn’t find a combined weight but assumed this was still ok given that it’s done for adults. Therefore, when I created my weights (for w2/4 and w2/6), I started off by combining the weights thus (after checking the overlap):

select cases with a non-zero weight for USOC or BGPS.
sele if not (b_ythscus_xw =0 and b_ythscbh_xw =0).

calculate weight (wt) as either USOC weight or BHPS weight.
compute wt=b_ythscus_xw.
compute samptype=2.
if wt=0 samptype=1.
if wt=0 wt=b_ythscbh_xw.
Val labels samptype 1 “BHPS” 2 “USOC”.

I then re-scaled the weights to average 1 within samptype and went on to model response to wave 4/6 contingent on wave 2, using interactions with samptype (USOC/BHPS) to take account of possible differences in response process between the two surveys. If it’s not ok to combine USOC and BHPS then my weights should still be fine given the way I’ve done them but it’d be helpful to know whether or not it’s ok to do so.

2) In the adult data, there seem to be many zero weights, more than we expected. We’d like to know if these are mainly related to students living in halls and other institutional addresses? E.g. among wave 5 fully productive interviews, the following syntax:

TEMP.
SELECT IF e_outcome = 11.
FRE e_indinub_xw.

yields 4,481 cases with 0 value for e_indinub_xw (cross-sectional adult main interview weight for USoc & BHPS samples).

Hi,

I am trying to work out the routing for some of the employment variables and for some variables, the routing in the questionnaire doesn't seem to match the routing in the data.

1. In wave 1, the routing stated in the questionnaire for a_jbhad is:

IF JBHAS = 2 AND JBOFF = 2

However, when I do the following (stata code):

gen route = a_jbhas==2 & a_jboff==2
tab a_jbhad route

I get the following:

ever had paid | route
employment | 0 1 | Total
-----------------+----------------------+----------
missing | 0 29 | 29
inapplicable | 26,525 1,190 | 27,715
proxy respondent | 2,036 1,226 | 3,262
refused | 0 2 | 2
don't know | 0 14 | 14
yes | 0 16,108 | 16,108
no | 0 3,864 | 3,864
-----------------+----------------------+----------
Total | 28,561 22,433 | 50,994

So there are 1190 observations that look like they should have been asked jbhad but were not. Why is this? Am I missing something in the routing?

2. The routing for b_jbbgd/b_jbbgm/b_jbbgy is the following:

IF (JBHAS = 1 OR JBOFF = 1)
AND IF (FF_IVLOLW<>1 & FF_EVERINT<>1)

However when I do the following (stata code):

gen route = (b_jbhas==1|b_jboff==1) & (b_ff_ivlolw~=1 & b_ff_everint~=1)
tab b_jbbgy route

I get this:

year started | route
current job | 0 1 | Total
-------------+----------------------+----------
missing | 0 1 | 1
inapplicable | 50,010 1,982 | 51,992
don't know | 0 16 | 16

So there are 1982 observations who do not get asked the date that their current job started even though they have never been interviewed before. Why is this? Again, am I missing something?
