Redmine Understanding Society User Support - Support #1400 (Resolved): Importance of Britishness to sense...https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/14002020-08-31T16:42:53ZJesse Shippjesse.shipp@soton.ac.uk

Hi,
Apologies this is a very basic question.
I am using USoc Wave 1 data to examine how important Britishness is to a sense of self (a_britid). I have recoded the data as I am looking at people aged 18-30 with parents from different ethnic groups or grandparents with different countries of birth.

In terms of the whole data-set, I don't understand what would make the respondents inapplicable. The guide suggests: 'if (GRIDVARIABLES.ModeType = 1 & CASISTART.scac = 1 thru 3)|GRIDVARIABLES.ModeType = 2 (Mode is face-to-face and has agreed to self-completion OR mode is telephone). This means 58.55% of respondents were not asked? Can someone explain simply please? Sorry I don't have any colleagues available to ask and I don't want to make any errors with the data I can use, which currently looks to favour feelings of Britishness being important to the respondents I am examining, hence why I am interested in the majority who have been excluded. Many thanks for any and all assistance.
Understanding Society User Support - Support #977 (Resolved): Merging a_child with a_indresphttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/9772018-05-21T10:05:53ZJesse Shippjesse.shipp@soton.ac.uk

Hi,

I'm Jesse, a PhD researcher based at the University of Southampton currently using USoc as part of a mixed-methods study. I use SPSS as my software programme.

I've been trying to merge the a_child dataset with the a_indresp data-set so that I can look at how childcare provision varies by ethnic group. I'm particularly interested in looking at grandparents who may provide care. I've tried to pair the data-sets by using pipd, but for some reason they don't match up i.e. the pipd numbers for the cases in a_child are not in the a_indrep set. The hidp do match, but due to multiple entries per house I'm unable to link the data-sets. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

My SPSS skills are somewhat basic, so I may be going wrong somewhere on the technical side. Apologies if this is an easy fix and many thanks for any support.

Best wishes,
Jesse Shipp
