Hello,

I am trying to select an appropriate weight but I am struggling with deciding which is the most appropriate. I am using the youth survey, and my analysis is at wave 1,3, and 5.

Based on the criteria, I was expecting

1. _lw because it is longitudinal, using waves 1,3,5

2. e_ which is the last Wave I use in the Understanding Society survey

3. It is at the individual level so _ythsc

zz_ part should be us_

e_ythsc_us_lw

I was expecting this but it does not appear to be there. Could you help me pick a weight? I have tried using the documentation and looking through files but I can’t seem to find an appropriate one. The youth are the main respondents but I have also linked fixed variables from household information such as deprivation variables and the youth’s parental mental health.

Kind regards
Understanding Society User Support - Support #1423 (Resolved): Merging youth to adult datahttps://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/14232020-10-12T13:29:03ZGeorge Compg_campbell@live.com

Hello,

I am using R to do my work.

I am looking at the impact of social media usage on the outcome variable satisfaction (yphfr) on adolescents as they transition from being a teenager to young adults and will use waves 1-8 because I am doing longitudinal analysis. I also would like to use the sclfsato variable as an outcome which I will treat as indetical to yphfr and essentially use it as the same outcome once they join the adult survey.

I want to look use both the mother and father's mental health mental health (GHQ) , and the mother and father's education (maedqf and faedqf) of the youth as a fixed variable.

I would also like to variables from the household level such as material deprivation (matdepa- matdeph) to assess this dimension.

So I will be using variables from the youth questionnaire such as age, whether they were bullied and so on. Link these with the mother and father's education and mental health, and the household so they are linked to the youth data.

The other complication is that I want to look at variables such as social media usage which is asked as both the youth and adult survey from the same individual.

How do I link the youth variables to the mother and father's data, and the household level, and then create eight waves of data to account for the older individuals in the youth survey who move to the adult survey when they are 16?

Many thanks
Understanding Society User Support - Support #1417 (Resolved): Time-varying predictor variables a...https://iserredex.essex.ac.uk/support/issues/14172020-09-29T14:12:25ZGeorge Compg_campbell@live.com

I am using longitudinal models and have a specific question regarding Understanding Society data and a specific way I would like to use variables.

I am looking at the effects of screen usage on wellbeing scores in youth but then some of them move into the main adult survey when they turn 16.

There is a variable called subjective wellbeing which is used in both the youth and the adult survey.

The subjective wellbeing questions are asked at waves 2, 4, 6 and 8 which is useful for me and it means that when individuals move from the youth to the adult survey, they are asked the same questions and it could be a good outcome to use.

My question is- a lot of my predictor variables of interest such as “games console usage”_ypconstm_ gets asked at waves 1,3,5, and 7. And I may potentially use games console usage as a time-varying variable. This is also the case for computer screen usage ypcpgs which gets asked at waves 1,3,5,7. Let’s say I wanted to use one of these as a time-varying variable of interest.

But is it an acceptable practice where some of my preferred predictors don’t occur at the wave of the outcome which is at 2,4,6,8, to then use them in the same model as time varying, when they occur at 1,3,5,7?

Is this normal practice? or is there a name for it? Also, are there any studies that do this which might clarify this question?

Any help would be much appreciated and thank you.
