Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits.

I am currently working with individual-level data from the merged Waves 1-18 of the BHPS and Waves 1-8 of the UKHLS datasets. I have a couple of questions regarding the use of weights in my analysis. I would appreciate any guidance you could provide.

1. In my study, I am employing fixed effects estimates to analyze the relationship between two variables, x and y. Given this approach, is it necessary to apply weights to the analysis?

2. I have followed the guidelines and used the longitudinal weight provided in Wave 8 of the UKHLS. However, I understand that this weight is applicable only to those who have participated in all waves. Since many individuals have only participated in parts of the waves, I am unsure how to generate weights for these participants. Could you please advise on the appropriate way to handle this situation?

Dear Sir/Madam,

Does BHPS and UKHLS interview all the members within a household? Is the health status of each household member available with the dataset?

Best wishes,

Dear Member of the Understanding Society team,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am emailing to enquire about some suggestions to build employment trajectories with employment history and the labour force spell data. Given the complexity of the data structure, it would be much appreciated if you could provide some guidelines regarding the subject.

Thank you ever so much for your time and all my best wishes,

Hi,

I am merging the chmain.dta across the third, fifth and seventh wave of UKHLS. In the third wave, each row is identified by pidp and absparno. On the other hand, the row is identified by pidp and childpno in the other two waves. Could you please give me a piece of guidelines on the following questions:

a. what is absparno?

b. without the childpno, how child can be identified in the chairman.dta within the third wave of UKHLS?

Greetings!

I am merging all the income datasets with the 18-wave BHPS and the 8-wave UKLHS. However, the row in income is not uniquely identified by fiseq_bh and pidp in wave B1, B3, B9, B10, B11, B15, B16, B17 and B18 (especially for the B17 and B18). Then I have tried to use fiseq_bh, pidp and ficode to identify rows. Still, there are about 360 rows are not uniquely identified by the three variables. Those repetitions are from the B17 and B18.

Could you please provide any suggestions on it? Do you have any documentations to explain how the rows are identified for each dataset?

Best wishes,

Hi,

Please see the link below: https://www.understandingsociety.ac.uk/documentation/mainstage/dataset-documentation/index/health-use-of-health-and-welfare-services

I am looking for the data on the usage of social welfare services. Based on the information in the above link, those variables eg. hlsvc are only available in the BHPS but not in the UKHLS. Are those variables not collected any more or are published in other affiliated dataset?

Best wishes,
